John Hardy

John Hardy was a desperate little man,
He carried two revolvers every day.
He killed him a man on the West Virginia line.
You oughta see John Hardy gettin' away. (2)

John started to catch that eastbound train,
So dark he could not see.
Along came a police and took him by the hand,
"John Hardy, come and go with me." (2)

John Hardy's father came to him,
He came for to go his bail.
But they wouldn't give bail for a murderin' man
So they throwed John Hardy back in jail. (2)

They took John Hardy to the hangin' ground,
Hung him there to die.
The very last words I heard him say,
"My forty gun never told a lie. (2)

"I've been to the East, I've been to the West,
Travel'd this wide world 'round.
I've been to the river and I been baptized;
Take me to the buryin' ground." (2)

John Hardy had a pretty little wife,
Children had she three.
But he cared no more for his wife and his child
Than he did for the rocks in the sea, (2)
