Subject: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: Mrrzy Date: 13 Dec 15 - 10:57 PM I've been reading about the financial and investment reasons to buy or build a home. What I'm interested in are the *other* reasons - what do you get that you want each way, what do you have to give up? |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: Bill D Date: 15 Dec 15 - 09:36 AM Ummm... buying is more 'convenient'... you just look and choose 'something comfortable'. If you have special interests or needs, building lets you design from the start... but finding a location and the right contractor takes lots of time & energy and even more time overseeing the process and negotiating changes. Other than that... what gnu said... |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: GUEST,HiLo Date: 15 Dec 15 - 10:22 AM I an not sure that a home can be or should be regarded as an investment.Financial advisors will generally agree that real estate (private home) is not the best way in invest money. Not being a financial expert by any means, I am not sure. We bought a very old house that needed a lot of work but it was situated on a very large bit of property. The great joy of this was unpeeling the layers in both house and garden and finding great treasures. The downside is that it is expensive. If you build your own, yes, you can design for your needs, but this may affect the resale value of the house, if you are looking at it as an investment. Buying an existing house and doing some small remodelling, might be the best answer. Your question is so broad, hard to come to grips with all the angles. |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: GUEST,Mrr Date: 16 Dec 15 - 08:54 AM I guess, which way do you get more of what you actually want, which is a combo of your childhood home(s) and movie sets you've loved? |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: maeve Date: 16 Dec 15 - 09:12 AM Mrrzy, we've done both. If I were you I'd make an extensive wish list including photos and drawings of what you think you want with those parameters in mind, highlight those most important, draw out various versions of the dream house and then confer with experienced friends/ contractors/realtors/the local real estate adverts, etc. to see where in the range of things your dream house lies. From there you can further scale back the Wants to the Needs and see what your budget and the local market will allow. Flexibility is a strength, and knowing what is really important to you will help you find your own path. Our choice this time was to build new based on just such a list/images. Two recommendations: 1. Don't get tied up in debt, and 2. Do your best to have the building and renovation done before you move in. |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Dec 15 - 04:19 AM We live in a farm house, built by the owner from 1942 to 1948; and the garden goes back all those years, too. I met a woman in church whose name is "Butterfly," and it turns out that she lived in this house in the 1950s and 1960s. Living in this old house, we feel like we've inherited a legacy. We inherited a lot of work, too - but we love living in an old house with established landscaping and an established history. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: Mrrzy Date: 17 Dec 15 - 04:05 PM To digress slightly, one of the childhood homes I'd include is now a museum as it was built by Lighthorse Harry Lee. When we lived in it, it was going to be turned into the museum but hadn't been yet, John L. Lewis had been living there. It's called the Lee-Fendall house, but we call it Lee-Fenjves (the j is silent) since that's Mom's family name. |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Dec 15 - 04:30 PM I was reminded this morning that there is one major disadvantage of living in an older house - old houses get C-O-L-D!!! It's 1:30 PM, and we just got around to cleaning the woodstove and building a fire. It's been bitter cold, even here in California, since we got up this morning. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: mg Date: 17 Dec 15 - 10:38 PM Do you still have teen twins at home? Your household might expand or contract. If you build or buy I recommend two master bedrooms with bathrooms..lots of versatility. Probably a duplex. Lots and lots of private bathrooms. Use cement reinforced if you can. Wood burns and rots and molds but is good in earthquakes. Obviously orient house for maximum efficiency and comfort. |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: GUEST,HiLo Date: 17 Dec 15 - 10:58 PM Why so many bathrooms, just curious? And who cleans all these bathrooms? I tend to look at how much work does a house require and cleaning a lot of bathrooms seems a bit of waste of time. |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: mg Date: 18 Dec 15 - 12:48 AM whoever uses them. but the more bathrooms the more flexibility you have in terms of housemates, guests, adult kids coming and going etc... |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: Mrrzy Date: 18 Dec 15 - 01:06 AM They are 20 now, mg, and I agree about the bathrooms, we are down to one now and it can be fraught in the mornings. Any nightmare scenarios from either side, also? |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: GUEST,hiLo Date: 18 Dec 15 - 01:53 AM We only ever had one full bathroom and one loo. We just made aa few rules... No shaving in the bathroom and three would shower at night and two in the morning. But yes, you must have as many as. Suits your needs. We just didn't,t want to reduce the size of our other spaces in order to have more baths. If the size of the house is limited Extra baths may not be the best use. Just another of those endless considerations when acquiring a new property. Anyway, best of luck to you Mrrzy. |

Subject: RE: BS: Buy or Build? Not Financial, Other From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Dec 15 - 02:21 AM I can't stand using the bathroom where the cat's litter box is located. And I can't stand sharing a bathroom with a young man who's not very good at cleaning up after himself. And I'm always afraid there's going to be a rattlesnake in the third bathroom, which is connected to the garage, which is not sealed off very well from the Great Outdoors. That's why bathrooms... Glad we have enough. -Joe- |
