Subject: Tune Req: Pigeon on the Gate Hornpipe From: GUEST,Fyldeplayer Date: 29 Sep 15 - 05:26 AM I am looking for the music/midi file for the HORNPIPE tune Pigeon on the Gate played by Chris Foster on his recording All Things in Common. I have tried the trillian MIT ABC tune finder which has 100s of versions but not it seems that one!! Thanks in advance. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Pigeon on the Gate Hornpipe From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 29 Sep 15 - 07:35 AM The name is attached to a number of reels, versions of the same tune in various keys, at least one completely different one (the 'old' Pigeon on the Gate) but the name has also attached itself to hornpipes, the 'Manchester' hornpipe among them. The question, often put forward by Séamus Ennis, remains 'was the Pigeon looking in or outside the gate?' |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Pigeon on the Gate Hornpipe From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 29 Sep 15 - 12:26 PM If we google this: chris foster pigeon on the gate a page comes up that lets us listen to it so we know which 'Pigeon on the Gate' Fyldeplayer (OP)is looking for. That oughta help. I have converted the ABC above to musical notation, and it is close to Chris Foster's version, but I believe it lacks the charm. It would take a lot of time to pin down, but I believe that in certain places where the ABC foozles about going up and down stepwise, Chris Foster puts in broken major chords that add sprightliness and sweetness. If you want to convert the abc, put a line at the top that says X:1. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Pigeon on the Gate Hornpipe From: GUEST,Ebor Fiddler Date: 29 Sep 15 - 01:36 PM It can be found in the book "Before The Night Was Out", published by East Anglian Traditional Music Trust (www.eatmt.org.uk). There is an Irish Jig called "Pigeon on the Gate, the step-dance tune is totally unconnected to it. Buy this book - it's great and good value for money too! Chris B. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Pigeon on the Gate Hornpipe From: GUEST,Fylde player Date: 29 Sep 15 - 02:30 PM Thanks too all. I think the tune is incorrectly named - versions I played from midi list all sounded like reels , a more Irish feel. I will check the Manchester horn pipe or else it's back to olde way, listen and learn, most of it already had ( nearly! ) - as I work with proper musicians I am expected to provide dots ! Just checked and the Manchester seems pretty close. Ta again for assistance. |
