Subject: BS: Horse Races From: Ebbie Date: 07 Jun 15 - 02:58 AM Just here to say: I like horses. I like races. I like the new Triple Crown winner. I had the feeling that Materiality would take today's race but I am happy with what did happen. |

Subject: RE: BS: Horse Races From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Jun 15 - 03:08 AM Do they have horse races in your part of Alaska, Ebbie? Or, for that matter, in any part of Alaska. I've never been to a horse race. I've seen them on TV, of course, but I don't think TV conveys the reality of horse racing. When I was an itinerant investigator, I made a few business calls to race tracks to interview people. It was fun to get "behind the scenes" in the stables. I think I like car racing better. Horse races end too quickly. When I as little, my dad worked the Indy car circuit, and I sometimes got to watch the race from the infield and go into the pits and meet drivers and mechanics - far more fun than the stables. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Horse Races From: GUEST, topsie Date: 07 Jun 15 - 03:21 AM I thought the Derby was always on a Wednesday. When did that change? |

Subject: RE: BS: Horse Races From: akenaton Date: 07 Jun 15 - 04:44 AM At our National Hunt track (steeplechases and hurdles), the public are allowed into the midfield for the biggest race of the year....it is a wonderful spectacle, if you stand near the fences the horses seem to fly over your head and the ground shakes as they approach the fence....the guys who ride these horses are the bravest men in sport. Ayr racecourse also hold flat racing, the richest prize being the Ayr Gold Cup, which was established in 1804 and currently carries a prize of over £100,000 Are there any jump races in the US? |

Subject: RE: BS: Horse Races From: gnu Date: 07 Jun 15 - 10:14 AM The Belmont Stakes was amazing! American Pharaoh spent 3/4s barely breathing hard. I knew it was a done deal coming into the final turn. What an animal! First Triple Crown in 37 years. I remember both of the last ones. Secretariat by 31 lengths was the most impressive I have ever seen. |

Subject: RE: BS: Horse Races From: akenaton Date: 07 Jun 15 - 11:25 AM Agree gnu, what a horse!....well balanced, completely genuine and brimming with stamina. Given a great ride by his jockey, he was always well placed and when he hit the stretch the button was pushed and the rockets kicked in. A true equine star and a joy to watch. |

Subject: RE: BS: Horse Races From: Jeri Date: 07 Jun 15 - 11:53 AM The movie "Secretariat" was on TV earlier in the day, and I remember that race. American Pharoah won the triple crown, and was amazing, but the Belmont started off a little slow and never really got super-fast. I think the other riders thought they'd wear him down, and that didn't happen. But Secretariat set the 1.5 mile Belmont Stakes record at 2:24, and American Pharoah ran it in 2:26:65, the 6th fastest time. I don't think another horse is likely to ever out-do Secretariat's time, or win by 31 lengths. |

Subject: RE: BS: Horse Races From: Ebbie Date: 07 Jun 15 - 12:24 PM Perhaps due to Secretariat's over-sized heart. Literally. They discovered at autopsy that his heart was almost half again larger than the usual. Healthily so, not stressed. There ARE horses in Alaska, even in Juneau. On the outskirts of my town is Echo Ranch, a religion-based destination that has a few horses. I've seen them in pasture while I was out hiking. I know very little about the place but it is popular in some circles. One year in the Independence Day parade in Juneau there was a pony - maybe 550-600 pounds - that was hauling a largish wagon with people aboard. My horse-training daddy would have been appalled. |

Subject: RE: BS: Horse Races From: Jack Campin Date: 07 Jun 15 - 01:53 PM I have been to a horse race once, in New Zealand, when I was about 15 - I had a day's work stoking their wood-fired boiler. I have never seen so many alcoholics in one place in my entire life (including the Mecca Bar in Glasgow and an alcohol rehab unit I once worked in). Stinking of drink, unshaven, unable to walk in a straight line, zits, huge blobby red noses and with truckloads of beer arriving all day long to feed their habit. It was utterly disgusting. |
