Subject: RE: Dick Miles not uk tour From: MartinRyan Date: 15 Apr 15 - 10:13 AM Incidentally, for non-Irish speakers: our anonymous GUEST appears to be suggesting that Good Soldier Schweik could learn punctuation. The effect is rather dampened by poor grammar and syntax! Regards |

Subject: RE: Dick Miles not uk tour From: The Sandman Date: 16 Apr 15 - 02:50 AM For those concerned with punctuation. I will be appearing at THE CORK SINGERS CLUB,The club is located at a public house known by the name of.... An Spailpin Fanach, in Cork City, close to the old Beamish Brewery site. An Spailpin Fanach, when translated means the THE WANDERING FARMHAND. |

Subject: RE: Dick Miles not uk tour From: The Sandman Date: 17 Apr 15 - 02:43 AM The evening will be unaccompanied songs only, just in case anyone wanted to hear me singing with accompaniment, those are the club rules |

Subject: RE: Dick Miles not uk tour From: GUEST,Learaí na Láibe Date: 17 Apr 15 - 11:49 AM For those concerned with spelling: The "Spailpín Fánach" Alt Gr + vowel gives the accent on my keyboard. The síneadh fada (accent over the vowel) is important in Irish; e.g. "Cas" means "twist" or "turn" "Cás" means "case" It also effects the pronunciation. That's pedantry for ye! In fairness to Good Soldier even the owners of the pub can't get the spelling right. They used to sell T-shirts to the unwary with "Spailpin Fanac" which is meaningless in Irish. Anyway, it's still a very nice bar with friendly staff and some nice sessions. The Cork Singers' Club has been running for 22 years now, most of that period in the Spailpín. Dick Miles is always a very entertaining guest with material we don't often hear. I'm sure Sunday night will be most enjoyable. |

Subject: RE: Dick Miles not uk tour From: FreddyHeadey Date: 18 Apr 15 - 09:21 AM ...unaccompanied songs only,... I'm not coming all the way to Cork but the other night in Liverpool you sang the last verse of a song unaccompanied and I felt your voice took on an extra quality which would be worth hearing more of. |

Subject: RE: Dick Miles not uk tour From: The Sandman Date: 18 Apr 15 - 02:44 PM Thanks. I have said this before, I think I sing differently unaccompanied, in some ways it is better, but in other ways the choice of harmony can add something good too, not necessarily better but different, and can provide more contrast during a gig. |
