SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — 24 March 2015

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert gave his stamp of approval Monday to a law that brings back the firing squad in the only state that has used it in the past 40 years.

The prisoner is seated in a chair that is set up in front of a wood panel and in between stacked sandbags that keep the bullets from ricocheting around the room.

A target is pinned over the inmate's heart. Shooters aim for the chest rather than the head because it's a bigger target and usually allows for a faster death, said Utah Rep. Paul Ray, who sponsored the proposal.

The prisoner is offered a two-minute window to offer final words.

Five shooters set up about 25 feet from the chair, with their .30-caliber Winchester rifles pointing through slots in a wall. Assuming they hit their target, the heart ruptures and the prisoner dies quickly [?] from blood loss.

The gunmen are chosen from a pool of volunteer officers, with priority given to those from the area where the crime happened. There are always more volunteers than spots on the squad, Ray said recently.

Notwithstanding the abhorrent medieval practice of execution in general, the idea of priority given to those living near the crime gives lie to the idea of justice being blind and incarceration being neutral in approach.

Truly horrific.

If you're going to have capital punishment I suppose this method is as effective as any other and probably more humane (irony) than some of the recent experiences with lethal injection.

Any of you who have had a serious surgery know that counting backwards from 100 means ya usually black out at 96. Why not give an overdose of that stuff if 'humane' execution is the aim?

Humane execution? Discussing different methods?

Wow...😳

The word humane was put in quotes.

I think this pretty much sums up the obscenity of this:

There are always more volunteers than spots on the squad, Ray said recently.

It's an obscenity for a state to murder people.
But if it's claiming that this murder is done humanely, GUEST is right; I've had many's the loved cat and dog put to sleep and die purring or licking my hand, slowly slipping into a deeper and deeper sleep until the heart stops. Why on earth not use the same stuff, if you think it's right to take away someone's life. Mind you, if you think that, you're damaged.

"Utah has voted to bring back execution by firing squad - on the same day that Arizona cleared Deborah Milke for a crime that saw her facing execution for 22 years."

Picked up from a post on Facebook by Amnesty International. Kinda says it all I think.

In the thirties our farmers were killed by the State by shooting them ON the Capital steps.

For the record, Donuel, That's bullshit. You're 100% wrong.
