Wikipedia on Nanteos cup

2 extracts from the article

The Nanteos Cup (Welsh: Cwpan Nanteos) is a medieval wood mazer bowl, held for many years at Nanteos Mansion, Rhydyfelin, near Aberystwyth in Wales.[1] Since at least the late 19th century it has been attributed with a supernatural ability to heal those who drink from it and traditionally believed to be fashioned from a piece of the True Cross.[2] By the early 20th century it had become a candidate - one of at least 200 in Europe - for the Holy Grail.[3][4] Juliette Wood, a folklorist specialising in medieval folklore and Celtic mythology, has stated that there is "no credible reference" to the cup prior to the end of the 19th century and "no mention of possible connections to the Grail until 1905."[5]

In 1977 the cup was displayed at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, as part of the "Aberystwyth 1277-1977" celebrations marking the 700th anniversary of the granting of the town's charter by Edward I. Specialists from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales used the opportunity to examine the cup and concluded that it dated from the Late Middle Ages and was carved from wych elm.[6] In July 2014 it was reported that the cup had been stolen from a house in Weston under Penyard while the occupant to whom it had been loaned was in hospital.[7]

The minutes of the meeting of the Cambrian Archaeological Society at which the cup was first exhibited record that George Powell introduced the object and gave an account of it being "preserved for many years past at Nanteos", having formerly been in the possession of the abbey at Strata Florida. The minutes also state:

It was supposed to possess healing power, which could only be called miraculous. It was sent for to the house of a sick man, and some valuable object was left as a pledge to ensure its safe return. The patient had to drink wine or some liquor out of it. Not content with this, he sometimes nibbled a piece from its edge: hence its present unshapely condition. The source of its alleged virtues were supposed to lie in its having formed a portion of the True Cross. I think there can be little doubt that so much of its pedigree is true as traces it to the possession of the Cistercians at Strata Florida. Nothing is more probable than that it was preserved in their church as a relic to which thaumaturgic powers were ascribed. The veneration accorded to it in the neighbourhood, and, still more decidedly, a regard for their own health and that of their families, would prompt the country-people to bring some pressure to bear on those who would otherwise have destroyed it, to secure this valuable relic. Probably the new lords of Strata Florida had some belief in its efficacy. If this account of the matter is true, the relic is extremely interesting, as an example of the survival of medieval belief, and even of medieval practice, down to our own day, in a country in which the popular religious sentiments are certainly not tinged with medievalism.[13]

You misread, Richard. The report said the cup was stored in that house from the reign of Henry VIII (not VII) until 1952 -- not from 1952.

At a wild guess. the 'true cross' must have weighed about 4 tons to account for all the claimed pieces of it strewn about.

One reason for the damage is that pilgrims would try to bite off a sliver of the cup.

When I was at university at Aberystwyth in the early 70s the cup was said to be stored in a bank vault in Shrewsbury.

Pfffttt! I HAVE the Grail. I am drinking beer out of it whilst I read this thread. It was stolen by my ancestral Celts to keep it out of the heathen Roman hands because they were down with the Roman Cat'lics. Then, when they paid the Germanic Tribes to fuck over the Celts, the Celts kept the grail just because eh. The Grail wasn't safe in WW1 so it was spirited to Canada in secrecy... of course, on a sleek schooner named The Bluenose, as it was the fastest vessel of the times, commandeered for the task by His... Her... whatever... Royal Navy. Anyway, Long short of it is, the Grail ended up in the back woods of Kent County, New Brunswick. I mean, where could it be safer? So, one day, Gramps says to me, "I'm just about done. I want one last drop O the pure before I go to the big bog in the sky. But, I want to drink it from The Holy Grail... look in the bed chest. I have been charged with it's safety since I was a boy" I found it. The minute I touched it, I was overwhelmed. He drank and I drank from the Grail. He shut his eyes... and I knew... I was the keeper of The Holy Grail. I must grab another Bud now. Grail's empty.

Richard - on my machine I hold down ALT GR and press e and I get é (it works for the other vowels as well).

Another way, if you have a number pad to the right, is to make sure NUM LOCK is on, then hold down ALT while putting in 130 on the number pad. When you release the ALT you will get é (different number codes are available for different accents - Google ALT codes).

Are we certain this report is up to date? I remember when the Police used to practice in Stuart Copeland's dad's garage in Blackheath in the early 80s - yes, they were a garage band before "garage" got hijacked. So at that time, their Holy Grail would have been a contract. Yup, there's many here been there.

Flash: the medieval Grail wasn't a cup at all but a bowl supposedly held up by Joseph of Arimathea to catch Christ's blood at the Crucifixion.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (1900): "Sometimes the Grail or Sangreal has been erroneously supposed to be the cup or chalice used at the Last Supper."

"Erroneously." But, hey, each to his own myth.

Ah, but there you are, Lighter. The usual folkloric multiplication of versions, and who's to say which is "correct"? Mudcatters, in particular, should know that establishing any definitive version of any traditional artefact is a prime example of pissing down the wind, chasing chimæras, trying to stop a bandersnatch... As to that "erroneously", don't pay too much attention: Oxford Dictionary innit -- and what do they know over there in that City Of Screaming Tyres, eh?

Jeri... my lighter is blue so it tweren't me. On a sad note, I had too many Buds last night and put a Grail in the dishwasher without looking under the bottom of it to see if it was dishwasher safe and... well... it's pretty much fucked. Looks like shit. Oh, I can still drink out of it but the table set is ruined and I can only use the set if I have only six guests. I suppose I could invite two threesome couples for supper or... I'll work it out. Just another crumb on the breakfast table, I guess. Roll with the punches eh? (Yes, intended.)

Well, M, there is a more practical and important point to be made. Whether chalice, bowl, platter, stone, or dish, the real grail is fictional, thus the recent thieves would have had to pilfer an imaginary object. Such an object is, of necessity, quite invisible.

So it will be devilishly hard for the authorities to recover, wherever it may be hidden. I cannot be optimistic.

Well, Lighter, as to whether King Arthur is an historic personage about whom much speculation has accrued, or a series of different ones who have become conflated by tradition; and if he/they actually had a court, at Camelot or elsewhere, containing a Round Table or not, and gathered together a group of followers dedicated to upholding the rule of law while driving out the remainders of some recent invaders; & bashed them on the shoulders with a sword & called them Sir...

...or whevs...

And if so,they had resolved to find what might have been the chalice used by Jesus at his Last Supper... OR the bowl in which someone who might just have been called Joseph & came from somewhere called Arimathea had caught the blood dripping down as he was crucified...

and then decided to carry it for some reason to an obscure island on the NW boundary of the Roman Empire...

Well, whether & if all this, then one supposes the so-called Holy Grail might have had a factual existence as a chalice or a bowl or whatever...

But what do you reckon the odds of all these ifs & whethers and maybes?

Googol-to-one?

Might just be worth a flutter just the same.

Meanwhile, I think I'll make a cup of tea -- in an ordinary bone china cup...

Or mug...

Or whatever...

Coz what is holier than a cup of tea when you need one, eh?

So that's my Holy Grail...
