Subject: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Big Al Whittle Date: 23 Apr 14 - 01:28 AM final episode tonight. I have always loved this story. so many fascinating facets . |

Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST,BigDaddy Date: 23 Apr 14 - 01:48 AM Must be in the UK. Hope it turns up here in the States on Masterpiece or whatever. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Musket Date: 23 Apr 14 - 04:24 AM I am watching it. Listening to it is another matter. Is it just me? Or is the soundtrack a bit wonky? I can't understand half of what they say. Knowing the story before hand helps I suppose. Mind you, it is Cornwall. They communicate via mouth organs you know..... |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Backwoodsman Date: 23 Apr 14 - 04:46 AM The dialogue is virtually unintelligible. And the picture is so dark as to be virtually invisible - I wish the production company would pay their electricity bill, so that they could get the supply reconnected and have some decent lighting on their sets. Otherwise it's OK. IMHO, of course! |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST, topsie Date: 23 Apr 14 - 05:27 AM There have been a lot of complaints about the sound - it seems there was a problem with the transmission. No doubt at some point there will be repeats, with the sound sorted out. |

Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: MGM·Lion Date: 23 Apr 14 - 05:28 AM Well, switch the subtitles on then. What they are for! ~M~ |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: MGM·Lion Date: 23 Apr 14 - 06:23 AM Agree with BWM about the wilfully impenetrable light-levels, though. And wasn't the first half-hour boring!! Daresay it got earth-shatteringly thrilling and moving & exciting after that; but I shall never know. I had given up. ~M~ |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Musket Date: 23 Apr 14 - 06:33 AM Don't you need your pension book as evidence before they let you use sub titles Michael? |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: selby Date: 23 Apr 14 - 06:58 AM I think who ever made this has cocked up and ruined a good tale lighting bad sound bad, cant realy comment on anything else as i cant see or hear it. Keith |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST Date: 23 Apr 14 - 07:19 AM Might as well be a foreign production in French or serbo Croat it is fairly unintelligible! |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Jim Carroll Date: 23 Apr 14 - 07:20 AM "I think who ever made this has cocked up and ruined a good tale lighting bad sound bad" I thought it was our tele, but it seems to be a fashion of late with the Beeb. There was a wonderful serial last year (The Village/ The Mill? something like that) set in a Lancashire Mill town, which was ruined by exactly the same problem - poor lighting and 'realistic' sounds (machinery drowning out the dialogue. Where is Lord Reith when you need him? Quite enjoyed what I've been able to peer at s far, but I think I was spoiled by the Alfred Hitchcock version starring Charles Laughton - they don't make them like that any more!! Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Joe Nicholson Date: 23 Apr 14 - 11:09 AM Yes there has been a lot in the media about the sound but for me the biggest problem was the picture which has only been mentioned here on mudcat. Joe Nicholson |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 23 Apr 14 - 11:21 AM It was very dark but we had few problems with the dialogue. We only used subtitles a couple of times. I liked the music. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Richard Bridge Date: 23 Apr 14 - 05:56 PM I turned it on tonight. I turned it off again after only a couple of minutes. Unintelligible, even through my fairly massive hifi, and hard to see even on my fairly massive TV! I have little if any trouble seeing or hearing anything else. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 23 Apr 14 - 06:11 PM From what I've read, Hitchcock didn't like his version either. He is reported to have said that the story was changed to give Charles Laughton (who part owned the production company) a more substantial part. Whether that was Du Maurier's main objection, I couldn't say. Unintelligable dialogue isn't confined to the BBC. When they originally screened "Mammon" in Norway there were the same complaints that the dialogue was incomprehensible, even to Norwegian speakers, so that half they through the run it got cleaned up. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST,Musket Date: 24 Apr 14 - 01:21 AM Must be bad if Bridge can't see or hear it with his posh capitalist toys. We proles couldn't see or hear it with our Bush CRT tellies either. ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST Date: 24 Apr 14 - 02:31 AM We have the sub titles on anyway so the sound quality didn't bother me. I've watched the first 1 1/2 hours and found it quite boring. The heroine spends most of her time giving "concerned" looks at the camera and stomping across (when she isn't falling into bogs) the moors in a huff. Perhaps the second half will be better but I've found little in the way of atmosphere or suspense so far. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST,Derek Dogger Date: 24 Apr 14 - 08:01 AM Sod the sound quality and the moody dark lighting... Lets get the priorities right, and keep all this escalating complaining and commotion in proportion; do any of the actresses get their knockers out or drop their knickers, to make any of all this arty farty snoozefest really worth making an effort to watch!!!??? |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST Date: 24 Apr 14 - 08:50 PM I did found the second 1 1/2 hr much better than the first and think that overall it was a good story. Shame it took so long to get going... |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Jim Carroll Date: 25 Apr 14 - 03:10 AM Wonder did anybody have the same problems with the excellent new detective series 'Shetland'. I read that viewers in Britain were demanding subtitles for that - haven't laughed so much since they demanded the same for 'Trainspotting' - we never have been good with foreign languages!!. Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: MGM·Lion Date: 25 Apr 14 - 04:10 AM Don't understand about 'demanding subtitles'; all modern sets have a readily accessible subtitle facility, which I use as a matter of course for most programmes, except sport where they get in the way and I'm never much interested in the commentary & punditry anyhow: my hearing isn't all it was. So what need to 'demand'? But even with them on, I found the beginning of JI so tedious that I gave up after ½-hr. If any tits came out after that, as Doggy 3 posts above hoped, then I missed it. Tough!* I've seen tits on telly before anyhow ~~ why, when Tara Fitzgerald & Jennifer Ehle were young there was more titsout on telly than any other sort of regular programming IIRC. ~M~ *Tough titty, in fact... |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Bonzo3legs Date: 25 Apr 14 - 02:35 PM I always demand subtitles at a Dick Gaughan gig - but that's another matter! I kept on asking my wife to turn the volume up during part 1 until our TV was on full and I still couldn't follow most of the dialogue. Is the director/producer such a pratt as to not recognise such poor sound when reviewing the broadcast copy? |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Brian May Date: 25 Apr 14 - 03:17 PM We turned it off halfway through the first episode - unintelligible and probably the worst BBC drama I've ever not seen. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST,Musket Date: 25 Apr 14 - 03:31 PM Subtitles... You may as well read the book. Come to think about it ...... |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Apr 14 - 03:41 PM Sounds like one to miss if it jumps across to this side of the pond. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 25 Apr 14 - 05:13 PM Because of the various reviews on the new Jamaica Inn I have decided to give this one a miss however the snippets that I have seen the sound quality is very bad. The dialogue seems to be in mumble mode, although I appreciate that there is a subtitle facility it is not satisfactory when you are having to do this most of the time. It appears to be a bit of a trend just lately not just for programs like Jamaica Inn, I am using subtitles more and more to view tv in general these days because of bad diction and sound quality. As far as Jamaica Inn goes as Musket said you may as well read the book! |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST, topsie Date: 26 Apr 14 - 04:04 AM "Is the director/producer such a pratt as to not recognise such poor sound when reviewing the broadcast copy?" If the problem was with the TRANSMISSION, the director/producer probably watched a version without a problem with the sound. |

Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Big Al Whittle Date: 26 Apr 14 - 06:53 AM my sister lives in St Just and she had been to visit us last week. on her journey home , knowing my love for all things Du |Maurier - she slipped into Jamaica Inn - to send me a postcard. in the lounge it on a notice -COME AND SEE THE NEW JAMAICA INN ON OUR GIANT SCREEN TELLY. I wonder how they got on. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Will Fly Date: 26 Apr 14 - 07:40 AM knowing my love for all things Du Maurier Did you ever smoke the ciggies? They were crap, they were. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST,CS Date: 26 Apr 14 - 09:34 AM I've watched it on iPlayer with the subtitles on, the actor playing Joss was the main one making inaudable grunts instead of speaking, the rest seemed OK. I guess the female lead was somewhat monotone and mumbly. I didn't object to the dingy set and lighting, probably par for the course for a wet miserable night in an old building without lecky. But there wasn't much in the way of suspense or drama, it seemed to all be 'mood' and little else. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: GUEST,BanjoRay Date: 26 Apr 14 - 11:22 AM Reading subtitles on a TV programme is a wonderful sport, because the software (I assume it's software, no human would be that bad) that transcribes the speech seems to be much deafer than any of the viewers, and mishears many more of the words than I do. Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: MGM·Lion Date: 29 Apr 14 - 12:10 AM Jamaica Inn was admittedly a notoriously extreme example. But, as current correspondences in some journals [eg The Times] point out, there is a current fashion for gabble and inaudibility in drama, including on tv. That's why I generally watch with the subtitles on. I didn't watch "Prey", which looked a promising mini-series, last night, as it clashed with Arsenal v Newcastle; and I didn't record it as I might well have done because I thought I would catch up with it on ITV·Player. But when I tried to do so this morning, I found that this channel doesn't provide subtitles that I could find [anyone know how to access them? If so, please tell], and, to my disappointment, had to give up after 10 minutes, as only about ⅓ of what even superb actors like Anastasia Hille were saying was audible. ɷɷBUM!ɷɷ ☠~M~☠ |

Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 29 Apr 14 - 02:03 AM You have to watch the adverts on ITV Player. Always record. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: MGM·Lion Date: 29 Apr 14 - 05:07 AM Good point: I generally do, in fact, Keith. Didn't this time coz thought there might be a clash with something which Emma, who is away for a few days, had set to record. Meanwhile have emailed itv customer services to see if they can tell me how to access subtitles on 'player'. ~M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: bubblyrat Date: 30 Apr 14 - 06:41 AM Didn't see it ,but read all the criticisms in the newspapers. Sadly, I found the subject matter somewhat unpalatable ; I find the romanticising of pirates, robbers, wreckers et al offensive . Also, the BBC tends to be a bit lacking in historical accuracy ; I found "The Musketeers" to be both armed and dressed in an alarmingly unrealistic (for supposedly the 1600s )fashion , and in recent years various programmes about Naval warfare in Napoleonic times have had us believe that naval gunners were still using Linstocks to fire cannon, when in fact they were using sophisticated flintlock mechanisms ; which , incidentally ,conferred upon the English a rate of fire up to three times that of the French !! Here endeth the lesson. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 30 Apr 14 - 02:37 PM The actions of the wreckers were not romanticised. They were quite shocking. There were no pirates or robbers. Some smugglers. |
Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Doug Chadwick Date: 30 Apr 14 - 04:29 PM As far as I could see, the heroine made her best efforts at being a law-abiding citizen and the wreckers, for the most part, got their come-uppance. As to historical accuracy, one of the advantages of being an ignoramus is that I can enjoy a good yarn without facts getting in the way. DC |

Subject: RE: BS: anybody watching the new Jamaica Inn From: Big Al Whittle Date: 30 Apr 14 - 06:23 PM theres a certain grittiness in Daphne du Maurier that defeats filmmakers, they can see its a damn good story - but the nastiness gives them the collywobbles. they blow it. max de winter becomes a victim rather than a murderer. the hideous fate of the caught wreckers in JI becomes a chance for them to strut in the spotlight. The nightmare figure of the albino vicar just looks like everyone else, and not a figure of dread. the lowest sort of folksongs - well any floorsinger could sound lower and more depraved than that,....and so on. |
