I wrote on the ongoing "Dencia" thread --

"I recall a novel, but regret I forget its name & author, telling of a dark-skinned black woman ostracised, or patronised as "dark meat" (that locution remains with me) by her lighter-skinned black contemporaries. I think the setting was Chicago."

Does anyone recognise this book or its author?

Was it Upton Sinclair's 'The Jungle'?

No. Thanks, Eliza; but it was no such famous writer as that. I think it was perhaps semi-autobiographical.

I am trying to put a date to when I read it. I seem to recall Valerie & I read it in the 1960s, when it was recently published IIRC.

Sorry to be so vague & wambly.

You're just like me Michael. I'm always trying to remember some literary detail, but sadly anything fairly 'modern' I don't have much knowledge about. (And I should also remember 'never use a preposition to end a sentence with!')

How about Not Without Laughter by Langston Hughes?

Oops, posted the wrong paste. Try, The Blacker the Berry by Wallace Thurman.

Many thanks, Allan. That was the one indeed. Greatly relieved to have tracked it down after all these years.

... and just to add a sincere thanks to Mudcat, which triumphs again ~~ my really quite obscure question, about something vaguely ½-remembered from 50 years back, answered in just about 20 minutes flat!!

MtheGM, you gave the right clues. The searching the key phrase together with the location and that it was not only a novel but was not a recent one was not terribly difficult. Given that the phrase is one that was in common use by military men some time ago I was surprised the search was not more encumbered with false leads.
