Now and then over the past twenty-five years I have experienced a spot of light appearing in the centre of my vision, which gradually expands, turning into a curved shape a bit like a question mark and consisting of moving zig-zags of mainly white, yellow, orange, red and blue. If I close my eyes it is still there. It goes on expanding for maybe twenty minutes until it disappears at the edge of my vision. It isn't a problem - I quite enjoy it - but does anyone know what is causing it, and does it happen to anyone else?

If its been happening for twenty five years , its probably NOT fatal . but I would be inclined to ask a Medic or optician .

Visual migraine, aka migraine aura. Yours are more colourful than mine.

I thought migraine would involve headaches and nausea and be generally very unpleasant.

The description sounds like what my ophthalmologist calls "floaters." These are little bits of opaque or semi-opaque cells that break loose from the retina or from elsewhere in the eye and "float around" in the fluid in the eye. What you see is the "shadow" they cast onto the retina.

In most cases they're considered "harmless," and there's no simple treatment. Most ophthalmologists recommend just ignoring (or in your case enjoying?) them. In very extreme (and rare) cases they become bothersome enough to consider treatment, but the only treatments available are very invasive and prone to failure.

It would perhaps be a good idea to get a check by a professional, and be sure to mention them and ask for an explanation; but they really are more common than most people realize - if that is what you're experiencing.

John

Are you taking any long-term medication? I ask because of an experience I had.

I suffered visual symptoms rather like that after being treated with compazine for vomiting. I hardly slept for the next 3 days, because every time I closed my eyes, crazy things appeared.

I mentioned this to a nurse, and she said, "Compazine is hard on women."

I get yellow & purple flashing zigzag lines in the centre of my vision. I pop a couple of paracetamol (Acetominaphen), close the curtains, close my eyes and relax. It's usually gone within ten minutes.

My doc told me it's silent migraine (not sure he actually used that precise term, but his explanation tied in with Guest: Bardford's link.

I guess it must be pretty unnerving. I have enough trouble putting up with "floaters" crossing my field of vision.

Thank you to all of you - silent migraine seems to be the answer.
I think I should be grateful that I only have the enjoyable symptoms and not the horrible headaches. I shall carry on enjoying the spectacle whenever it happens.

See your doctor.

We are well-meaning amateurs here, I prefer to discuss my health with the professional who has my medical history and knows me.

You wouldn't ask a doctor for advice on playing the guitar, fiddle, piano et al, why ask a music forum to diagnose a medical condition?

IMHO. YMMV.

An eye check by an optician wouldn't go amiss, either.

Thirded. There are many possible causes, some of which may well turn nasty in the 26th year.
