Subject: Runaway Slave Song From: GUEST Date: 20 Feb 14 - 12:14 PM Hello Mudcatters I've just finished a song that may interest some of you. It's about a runaway slave named Tom, whose name I came across while doing research for a story on a slave owned by my ancestors. The advertisement, from January 1795, noted that Tom could be identified by his scars, which were quite extensive. He was also listed as a "notorious runaway" -- likely due to the fact that he and his wife had been separated by their masters. This is a hybrid song -- mostly recitation, but also including the singing of reworked lyrics from "Going Down The Road." It is fairly long -- a bit over 13 minutes -- but ends happily. If anyone has time/inclination to listen, your feedback greatly appreciated. Dave Shiflett dhshifl@aol.com http://www.daveshiflett.com/?section=music-70 |
