Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: Nigel Parsons Date: 24 Jan 14 - 03:20 AM What's the problem? Presumably "Cannibal Rats" are only a danger to other rats. (From Miriam-Webster dictionary) can·ni·bal noun \ˈka-nə-bəl\ : a person who eats the flesh of human beings or an animal that eats its own kind |

Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 24 Jan 14 - 04:01 AM But logically, those rats couldn't go on and on eating eachother. The amount of protein on board is finite, no matter how often they reproduce. It's like a snake eating its own tail. There must be some other kind of food on the ship, perhaps supplies for the crew. I suppose the poor creatures may be able to drink rain. I feel very sorry for them. Maybe the ship will be grounded somewhere so that they can get off and onto dry land. And surely, in these days of global insecurity and terrorism. most countries survey constantly the seas and oceans. Any 'unidentified floating mass' would be flown over and scrutinised thoroughly. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 24 Jan 14 - 09:53 AM this all suggests that the ship had made it two-thirds of the way across the Atlantic and was headed east. A poorly written article, at best. suggests that the ship had made it two-thirds of the way across the Atlantic "Had made it" implies a purposeful goal, at least partly successful, and "was headed east" implies that the vessel is under power and steerage. It's merely drifting with wind and current. Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Jan 14 - 01:39 PM Perhaps Canada should ship excess coywolves to Britain for rat control if the "ghost ship" gets there. Saw the "Nature" special on public television. Toronto has about 2000 that have come to the city, and one was caught in Central Park, NYC, no they are there too. In addition to DNA, this cross differs from the coyote in having a wider head and shorter ears, slightly larger size. and a longer bushy tail. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 24 Jan 14 - 01:47 PM So its coywolves for the rats, long guns for the coywolves, hand guns for the long guns, assault rifles for the handguns then they'll be just like us? :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Jan 14 - 09:04 PM Gnu, if it comes around again, look at the Nature special on the coywolf. They are a cross that has taken up much of the eastern territory once occupied by wolves (the pure eastern wolf has been exterminated. In fact this hybrid has become the dominant form in much of the northeast. "Brush wolf" is a local name, I think first applied when the critter was considered an eastern type of coyote. Attractive animals! see www.adirondackwildlife.org/Coywolf.html. Not much information, but I haven't looked up other references. |

From: Charley Noble Date: 24 Jan 14 - 10:13 PM By Hamish Maclaren, Sailor with Banjo, pp. 23-25, © 1930 Adapted for singing by Charlie Ipcar in 1999/2012 Tune adapted from: Blow the Candle Out The Rodent Mariners Em----------Bm----Em---G We are the rodent ma-ri-ners, Bm/Em-----Bm As nobody needs be told, -------------Em-----Bm----------Em--------G For there's no mis-taking our nau-ti-cal airs, Bm/Em-----Bm-----Em Our roving eyes so bold; Em---------------Bm----------G--------Bm There's never a ship leaves English ground, -------Em---------------------Bm From Liverpool Docks to Plymouth Sound, -----Em----Bm-----Em-------G For Frisco Bay or Bombay bound, ----------------Bm-------------Em But we have free run of her hold! Chorus: With a churr churr churr, And a quee quee quee, 'Tis the rodent mariner Who is Lord of the Sea! We march aboard in companies, All in the dead of night, Over the hawser from the quay In the shadow of the watch lamplight; Each roving rat his ship will choose, From nose to nose we pass the news, Of cargoes, destinations, crews, And none can us affright. (CHO) We'll live like kings once we set sail, Each vessel leaving land, A wandering larder which entails A feast for every hand; Maize, apples, salmon, barley, rice, Nutmegs, olives, South Sea spice, Meats and India merchandise, And all at our command! (CHO) We know the ports of all the world All warehouses, all quays, All islets, coral-ringed and pearled, The Blue Hesperides; And men may live and men may die, And men may blow great fleets sky-high – But rats alone will hold for aye The Freedom of the Seas! (CHO) When we are old and weather-beat, Too old to sail about, In some rum shop we will stop Till eight bells call us out; It's there we'll raise our glasses high And spin our yarns till the taps run dry; But we'll make sure before we die To send our sons to sea! |

Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: bubblyrat Date: 26 Jan 14 - 08:26 AM When I was in the Royal Navy ,there was an item in "Navy News" about a small vessel,ie minesweeper or frigate ,which intercepted a cargo container which had been washed overboard from a container ship in the North Sea . They were ordered to sink it ,as it was a "hazard to navigation" (the container !) . So they sank it by gunfire (Bofors 40/60 mounting ), and down it went (eventually) along with its contents (several million cigarettes !) . The point is this ; IF a small container poses a "hazard to navigation " ,then what about a bloody great big ship drifting about ?? Are we supposed to believe that this thing has drifted around, unsighted, for a whole year ?? Tell it to the Marines !! |

Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 26 Jan 14 - 10:50 AM No doubt the ship, if it exists, is being tracked by satellite "eye." |

Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 27 Jan 14 - 09:27 AM What Q says. If Google Earth(TM) can pick out car number plates...Where's a drone when you need one? I thought all modern ships carry transponder type GPS systems so owners can track them. Whoever carried its insurance would want to track it in case it hit another vessel or oil rig and generated a claim. RtS |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 27 Jan 14 - 10:48 AM RtS, Having read the article, I do not believe there is an an insurer and it is unlikely that the transponder was powered up as it was being towed away for scrap. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 27 Jan 14 - 12:03 PM It must still be worth quite a bit as scrap. You'd think salvage firms would be chasing it, since, as it's still afloat, it would be relatively easy to tow it away (with a stronger cable this time!). A lot easier than salvage of sunken wrecks from the bottom of the sea. I'm still worried about those poor little rats, trapped on the thing. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 27 Jan 14 - 01:31 PM Cannibal rats. England already has a large population. a few more makes no difference. Estimates are that there are more rats than people. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ghost ship, cannibal rats, to Briton? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 27 Jan 14 - 06:56 PM Scots have eradicated rats from some islands important to bird populations, but the 'ghost ship' rats would find friendly faces in Glasgow and Edinburgh. |
