Subject: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: GUEST,married more than 30 years Date: 18 Jan 14 - 02:01 PM Rom-Coms, I love 'em all !!! Even the the bright coloured pop song laden teen high school tripe. But, especially the really long ones with grown up actors that drag on for nearly 2 and a half hours or more. Doesn't matter what the "Radio Times" movie critics think, I record 'em all. They're all brilliant as far as I'm concerned. Today I've had a great Saturday afternoon session of Rom-Com heaven... Sat the wife up in front of the bedroom TV - wrapped in her favourite warm fluffy snuggle blanket, a bucket of sweets - Two Rom-Coms in a row, and I've not heard a peep out of her for getting on 4 hours... Fantastic !!!! That's nearly 4 hours undisturbed, and I've managed to set up a guitar and revalve an old amplifier without the slightest interuption. Thank God for Rom-Coms. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 18 Jan 14 - 02:21 PM My choice- My collection of Chinese warrior films. All beautiful, predictably similar, don't understand the language- most relaxing, asleep by the third action sequence. Almost as good as Monday Night Football, which puts me to sleep in ten minutes. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: Jack the Sailor Date: 18 Jan 14 - 02:30 PM Not a big fan of the Rom-Com genre, but "When Harry Met Sally" was a brilliant movie. I really enjoyed the old couples on the couch telling how they fell in love. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: GUEST,Stim Date: 18 Jan 14 - 06:04 PM One wonders if perhaps your life companion loves the guitar, old amplifier, and attendant music, because they allow her 4 hours to watch movies that she loves without the slightest interuption;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: Mrrzy Date: 19 Jan 14 - 05:28 PM Ah, OK, romantic comedy. Took me a while. When Harry Met Sally was and still is a howl. Can't actually think of any others I liked, but that's thread creep into a different question about movies... |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: Mrrzy Date: 19 Jan 14 - 05:31 PM OK, The Philadelphia Story, What's Up Doc, Bringing Up Baby which is the same movie almost, His Girl Friday and others I would normally have termed screwball comedies are also romcoms. Screwcoms? |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: MGM·Lion Date: 20 Jan 14 - 12:21 AM Despite a sort of po-faced suspicion that one should have moral scruples about loving a hilarious/romantic film which begins with the St Valentine's Day Massacre, let's hear it for "Some Like It Hot". After all, 'Nobody's perfect!' And do ambivalent old Ealings like "Kind ❤❤ & ♛♛" count? ~M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 20 Jan 14 - 04:28 AM When Harry Met Sally has to be on the top ten list of all time. Ditto Four Weddings & A Funeral. Another film which I found delightful was Maverick with Jodie Foster & Mel Gibson - they spend most of the script being adversaries and they're well matched. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: MGM·Lion Date: 20 Jan 14 - 04:31 AM When Harry Met Sally has what I think I treasure as the funniest throwaway line of the lot of them: "I'll have what she's having". |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 20 Jan 14 - 04:35 AM Knew I'd think of more just as soon as I signed off: both The Birdcage and its French original, La Cage aux Folles are terrific. Also Annie Hall. I'm probably going to be adding to this list all morning now, instead of doing my work. MGM, a good tale that cheers us is never too old to count! Bring 'em on... |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 20 Jan 14 - 04:38 AM Film Trivia (you probably already knew this): The lady at the other table who says that line was director Rob Reiner's mother. Or so I heard tell - |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: MGM·Lion Date: 20 Jan 14 - 04:57 AM Ah! I didn't know that, & have often wondered who was the fortunate person so fleetingly privileged. Very grateful for the info, Bonnie. Thank you! |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: Jack the Sailor Date: 20 Jan 14 - 05:48 PM The Bird cage movies were hilarious. Hank Azaria had me rolling on the floor with the "pirin" pills. "Nobody's perfect" Good one M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 21 Jan 14 - 08:57 PM I'd forgotten that! I loved it. First Wives' Club is a lot of fun, though I wouldn't exactly call it a rom com - more of an anti-rom com. But a good watch all the same. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: MGM·Lion Date: 22 Jan 14 - 04:17 AM Not sure I'd actually call Morgan one, either ~~ 'com', but hardly 'rom' IMO; more a slightly oblique bit of R D Laingian [pseudo?] psychology, as I once heard its author David Mercer [a bit of a pseud IMO also, but well-regarded at the time by some; & a friend & acknowledged propagator via his works of Laing]] confirm in a talk to the Cambridge Univ Lit Soc. Has one of my favourite bits of dialogue: "Hey, you'd better watch it!" "All right, but where is it?" ~M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Rom-Coms; best movies ever !!! From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 22 Jan 14 - 09:23 AM I liked the bit about "Napier babies... ewwwwww, you don't want one of THOSE growing inside you!" My boyfriend & I riffed on that line for weeks - our mothers didn't understand what we were talking about, and got sort of upset. Which made it even better. "I've gone all furry" was another fave. #fogiesforever |
