Subject: BS: Another Obit: Joan Fontaine.
From: Don Firth

And another giant in the acting field, Joan Fontaine, has just passed away at age 96.

I recall seeing her in numerous films. She was "Jane Eyre" in the 1943 movie of the same name. This movie contained a bit of a "who's who" among Hollywood actors. Fontaine, of course, playing opposite Orson Welles as the brooding and troubled "Mr. Rochester" with a deep, dark secret. Early in the movie, when the young Jane Eyre was sent off by her cruel and abusive aunt to Lowood School for Girls, the young Jane was played by 12-year-old Peggy Ann Garner (Oscar for "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"). Her sickly friend at Lowood School, Helen, who died of "consumption" was played by 11-year-old Elizabeth Taylor.

I recall seeing Joan Fontaine in a number of movie versions of "Gothic" novels such as the aformentioned "Jane Eyre," and Daphne du Maurier's "Rebecca," opposite Lawrence Olivier and Dame Judith Anderson as the cold-faced and menacing housekeeper "Mrs. Danvers."

And as "Rowena" in the 1952 Hollywood rendition of Sir Walter Scott's epic novel, "Ivanhoe," opposite Robert Taylor as "Wilfred of Ivanhoe." and, again, Elizabeth Taylor as "Rebecca" (different Rebecca) as the young woman Ivanhoe saves from being burned at the stake as a witch, through "Trial by Combat" with George Sanders as "Brian de Bois-Gilbert."

Joan Fontaine was one of the Big Hollywood Stars, very much at home with all the other contemporary "Biggies."

RIP, Ms. Fontaine, and thank you!

Don Firth

Yes, it was. Both men and women could act.

And her sister is still alive - Olivia De Havilland, who is 97, is Joan Fontaine's sister.

Must be good longevity genes in their family.

Amazingly, Olivia De Havilland was one of the leads in "Gone With The Wind".
She's witnessed a lot of changes in the movie industry!
