Subject: BS: Knees From: EBarnacle Date: 16 Dec 13 - 08:24 AM OK, kids. I am lying here in a rehab facility, having had my left knee replaced. That was done Wednesday. It was much less painful than I had anticipated. The pain is in the necessary flexing, bending and building up strength in the leg. Once I am far enough along we will get the second one done so I can get on with my life. Lady Hillary has been a trouper through it all. |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: Wesley S Date: 16 Dec 13 - 08:32 AM I've heard from several people that there was a lot less pain than expected. But it still can't be a very pleasant experience. Take care and take it easy. |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: dick greenhaus Date: 16 Dec 13 - 08:46 AM Had it done back in September 2001. By early October I was romping up and down hills and dales at the Getaway. Didn't give any trouble until four years later, when they removed a vein from that leg during bypass surgery, which left it sore for the next eight years, until I found a rheumatologist who prescribed Cymbalta, which made the pain go away. The tin joint still works jes' fine. |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 16 Dec 13 - 09:25 AM One of my friends had both knees done at the same time. She persevered with the post-op exercises and physio. Rather painful for the first few days, then - wheeeee! - she was flying around like anything. She could walk all the way into the centre of town from her flat, and back home again up the hill. Wonderful for her. It is important to do the exercises and flex the new joint as much as poss. This stops adhesions forming, which can restrict the movement later on. I wish you a rapid 'up-and-at-'em' EBarnacle, good for you! |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: Jeri Date: 16 Dec 13 - 09:45 AM This may be a no-brainer for most people, and I've had knee surgery--not replacement. Take the pain pills before physical therapy. Even if you don't otherwise need them and are being noble, take them for therapy. It really does help you keep going and try your hardest. I wish you a speedy and complete recovery! |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: SINSULL Date: 16 Dec 13 - 09:50 AM My father had both knees done at the same time when he was in his eighties. He amazed the doctors - out of the hospital in four days and out of rehab in another four. I suspect the pain in no way matched what he was experiencing pre-surgery. Made his life so much better. I see it my future hopefully not for a few more years. |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: Rapparee Date: 16 Dec 13 - 10:24 AM Gonna have to have that done in a few years more (I hope it's that far out). Got artificial synovial fluid injected on Wednesday last and officially became an old fart when the doctor gave me some papers and said, "Go get your handicapped parking placards." |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: Will Fly Date: 16 Dec 13 - 10:44 AM Best wishes for a successful outcome and a speedy recovery - same day as my Audi went in for its 80,000 mile service. That was OK and I'm sure yours will be. :-) Any new brains around? I could do with one... |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: gnu Date: 16 Dec 13 - 01:44 PM Best of luck with it. Excellent comments and advice in these posts and it's appreciated as I too may be in line in the not too distant future as a former squash nut who foolishly continued to play on an irregular basis, even when I gained weight. |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: EBarnacle Date: 16 Dec 13 - 03:04 PM I tried the synovial They felt great for 2 1/2 months. Medicare will only pay for them for six month cycle. Besides, there's no cartilage left to lubricate. I bit the bullet and asked to do both at one. He refuse citing the fact that the rate of complications goes WAY up when both are done simultaneously. I am seeing him next week to have the staples removed and a scheduling assessment for the next one. Today's the first day I have had any real, tho minimal motion in the lower level. Had I done both I would have been crippled for a while |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: EBarnacle Date: 26 Jan 14 - 09:10 PM Much to my surprise, I am almost fully functional, including the ability to do stairs better than I could before the surgery. This coming Tuesday I go back in for the left knee. If the pain on this knee is as minimal as on the first knee I hope to sail right on through. Thank you to all who have contacted me to wish me well. |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 27 Jan 14 - 05:33 AM Very pleased to hear how well you've progressed. Told my friend about you, and she sends her best wishes too. Her knees are still pain-free and despite being nearly eighty, she's never at home, walking all over the place around town. I bet it's so liberating not to suffer pain, EBarnacle. Kind thoughts from Eliza. |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 27 Jan 14 - 09:20 AM I gather knees are more dificult than hips. Most hip replacement folks seem to do really well but I know several people whose knee replacements have taken longer than expected to settle down and some have needed to go back, one has gone in today to have the replacement replaced. Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: EBarnacle Date: 27 Jan 14 - 08:13 PM Eldergirl, the only advice I can give is to work hard at using the rehab you get. The rehab people I have dealt with here in New York and new Jersey say that they believe that my rate of recovery is a function of pushing myself beyond what they ask for and minimizing the pain killers unless I actually need them. This encourages the body to take care of itself. |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: EBarnacle Date: 08 Feb 14 - 10:38 PM I got a comeuppance. Thuesday, about 1/2 hour after PT, I got into a massive cramp which actually required me to jse a major pain killer for the first time in this round. We were able to reduce it with massage and icing.and I should be back on track Monday. |

Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: wysiwyg Date: 09 Feb 14 - 10:36 AM I've heard that doing a lot of PT BEFORE surgery helps speed recovery too. It's important to push within supervision. Going beyond PTs limits can also set back the bobe healing. Lots of zinc and protein for healing. Lots of deep sleep also. ♥♡♥ |

Subject: RE: Bee Knees From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 10 Feb 14 - 01:03 AM Every similar situation I have known...the person had been grossly overweight for years. They lost weight for the surgery....but later returned to their previous corpulent balloon type body. They did not exercice. The real problem was in their head not with their knee or hip. Subject: RE: BS: Knees From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 11 Feb 14 - 04:54 AM My old friend Pat (who had both knees done) has never been in the least overweight. She does however have a lot of arthritis. It's now in her feet and hands. As to exercise, she was a hospital nurse and sister for 37 years, so I shouldn't think lack of exercise was ever an issue! |
