Although Vic and Tina Smith are, alas, stepping down from the Royal Oak folk club on a Thursday night in Lewes after 50 years of running clubs, Lewes Saturday Folk Club and the many Lewes sessions continue to flourish. For over twenty-five years, Lewes has had two weekly clubs both putting on mainly traditional performers and both have thrived, in recent years co-operating to put on a folk music festival in the town. Lewes has an adult population of about 16,000. Never tell yourselves that there isn't a demand for this music and that venues have to be locked in competition. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all on Mudcat, and especially to Max for keeping it going in the teeth of the elements. |
