Subject: BS: Firefox Freezes From: Ebbie Date: 02 Oct 13 - 07:53 PM It used to be fine but the last few weeks Mozilla Firefox freezes. Frequently. Sometimes a couple of times a day. Never for long- perhaps three or four minutes. Why is that? What can I do about it? Thanks in advance! |

Subject: RE: BS: Firefox Freezes From: bobad Date: 02 Oct 13 - 08:07 PM Firefox is working normally for me, is it possible the problem may be with your computer? |

Subject: RE: BS: Firefox Freezes From: Bev and Jerry Date: 02 Oct 13 - 08:59 PM It's been totally crashing for us, maybe once a day on average. We've reported this to Mozilla and hoping something will get fixed. Bev and Jerry |

Subject: RE: BS: Firefox Freezes From: Ebbie Date: 02 Oct 13 - 11:37 PM OK, thanks, I've now uninstalled it and then downloaded and installed a new one. Note: The version I uninstalled is the same version: Firefox 24.0. And the inscrutable notice I've been getting from the site is still with me: "Firefox could not install the search plugin from "file:///C:/Users/The%20Owner/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/nxy5apt5.default/extensions/toolbar@ask.com/searchplugins/askcom.xml" because an engine with the same name already exists." What is IT? and how do I get rid of the "engine with the same name". What's the engine? |

Subject: RE: BS: Firefox Freezes From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 03 Oct 13 - 07:35 AM My wild guess is that the "search plugin" from the former installation had not been uninstalled successfully. Its purpose may have to do with shortcuts to search engines such as Google. I would not worry about that. OTOH, I would not bet much money that your problems are now solved. When software "freezes" for a couple of minutes, it is usually busy with internal work that takes longer than expected by the programmers. You will see activity on the Task Manager and/or on your hard disk (lamp blinking). If the latter dominates, your computer may have too little memory, or even your hard disk may be full. Try to tweak some options in Firefox that deal with keeping web pages etc. in memory. If the effect only applies when particular pages are being displayed, the "scripts" or other active parts of that page may be the culprits. These will normally not freeze the browser in the sense of rendering it completely unresponsive, but there may be exceptions, including genuine viruses. If it only happens when Mudcat is active, tell us. |

Subject: RE: BS: Firefox Freezes From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 03 Oct 13 - 08:56 AM It may have been due to the Government Shutdown; information gets stuck on the NSA server. |

Subject: RE: BS: Firefox Freezes From: JohnInKansas Date: 03 Oct 13 - 11:35 AM The error message on the failure to install gives a complete path/file name for the file. You may not see it if it's entered as a "System File" unless you turn on a "view hidden/system files" in Win Explorer, but you should be able to find it fairly easily and just delete. If it's part of the Firefox install routine, you might want to remove and reinstall again, but that's your choice? IFF it's registered as a hidden/system file you might need to change the attributes to delete it, which will requrie Admin authority; but I'd doubt that's the case. It's obviously an "ask.com" plugin from the filename, so probably not really necessary unless you want to use that site for searches? John |

Subject: RE: BS: Firefox Freezes From: bobad Date: 03 Oct 13 - 05:24 PM Whenever I've had an issue with Firefox it's always been because of a plugin which either wasn't working properly or was not compatible with an update. You can try disabling your plugins to see if the problem goes away. |

Subject: RE: BS: Firefox Freezes From: Ebbie Date: 04 Oct 13 - 01:03 PM I need a live-in tech! The phrases are familiar to me: pathways, plug ins and hidden systems, but accessing and tweaking them is quite beyond me. I did go to where the hidden system files are available- but after the warnings it popped up with, it scared me too much to do anything but stare. |

Subject: RE: BS: Firefox Freezes From: Stilly River Sage Date: 04 Oct 13 - 01:10 PM I posted yesterday and I see it didn't stick. There was an update that Mozilla pushed out yesterday or Wednesday. You may need to visit the site if it hasn't updated. I have my system set to ask not automatically install updates; if you have automatic updates in place you might not even notice the fix. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Firefox Freezes From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 04 Oct 13 - 05:56 PM Ebbie, please tell us whether the original problem persists, and if so, whether "freezing" means not reacting to any input at all (such as clicking on a menu) or just delaying the display of websites. Being not a tech at all, I would not bet that the "ask.com" plugin is actually the culprit, but it should be accessible via "Extras -> Add-Ons". |
