Subject: BBC iPlayer - The Devil's Music series 2 From: Will Fly Date: 29 Sep 13 - 10:02 AM Just discovered the Alexis Korner 1979 series "The Devils's Music" on the iPlayer. Here's a link to programme 1 |

I never got to see the original series - living in a one room urban shack at the time, with an aerial and a power socket but no tv - but surely there was more to it than just those four episodes? |

Subject: RE: BBC iPlayer - The Devil's Music series 2 From: Will Fly Date: 29 Sep 13 - 10:51 AM Can't think why I missed it first time round - probably out gigging! I wonder if Series 1 still exists... Looks like it's on the iPlayer as part of the recent "All American Collection" of TV programmes on BBC4. |

Subject: RE: BBC iPlayer - The Devil's Music series 2 From: GUEST,Hotenanny Date: 29 Sep 13 - 12:22 PM Will, Well spotted I did see it first time around and had forgotten how good it was. Songs played in full without interuptions from talking head rock musicians and good quality filming. After I have watched them all I will have to take in Terkel's film. Thanks for posting. Hoot |

Subject: RE: BBC iPlayer - The Devil's Music series 2 From: Will Fly Date: 29 Sep 13 - 12:30 PM It was fun to watch AK. His radio blues hour was a must - followed on when the Mike Raven show series stopped, as I recall. I used to see Alexis in the old BBC Club bar in the Langham now and then, waiting to go over to the studios to record his slot - also met him a few times at the Cousins all nighters. Always seemed like a good bloke to me, but I would say more of an influential musician than an exciting one... Anyway, it was worth seeing his hair and sideburns again - so 70s! :-) |

Subject: RE: BBC iPlayer - The Devil's Music series 2 From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 30 Sep 13 - 05:52 AM I agree with you Will Alexis was more influential than exciting, a good presenter and also voice over for tv commercials. Far more exciting in my opinion was Cyril Davies particularly after his split from Alexis. I remember the jam packed Thursday nights at the Marquee with Cyril's band which then spawned a Tuesday session by a group of newcomers headed by Mick Jagger. Hoot |

Subject: RE: BBC iPlayer - The Devil's Music series 2 From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Date: 30 Sep 13 - 06:04 AM I agree, Cyril Davies was some cookie. What a crying shame he died so young, 50 years ago next January in fact. I used to have a copy of the EP which his band made for Pye International. Alas, it disappeared in a house move years ago. I've lost very few records in my lifetime, but you can bet your darned tooting that had to be one of them. |

Subject: RE: BBC iPlayer - The Devil's Music series 2 From: Will Fly Date: 30 Sep 13 - 06:11 AM Ah, Fred - I have that very same EP in my collection. As I recall, the tracks were "Country Line Special", "Sweet Mary", "Chicago Calling" and one whose name escapes me for the moment. Nicky Hopkins also played some mean piano on it - and you can hear Long John Baldry's voice there in the backing choruses. Sweet! Let me know if you'd like some mp3s... |

Subject: RE: BBC iPlayer - The Devil's Music series 2 From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 30 Sep 13 - 11:28 AM The 45rpm single of Country Line Special / Chicago Calling currently sells for £30 plus at record fairs if you can find it. The last one I saw was £36.00 about six months back. One of the best R&B numbers to come out of the British scene. Hoot |

Subject: RE: BBC iPlayer - The Devil's Music series 2 From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Date: 01 Oct 13 - 06:52 AM Will, thanks for your kind offer to MP3 me the Cyril Davies ep tracks. Could you email them to me at StationWSM@aol.com ? That's not my regular e-mail address. In fact it's a redundant one which I can always close down if I start to get abusive emails from a certain person who used to post on Mudcat. Hopefully the guy has either ceased or deceased, but you can never be sure. Of course I'll see what I've got that I can send you by way of many thanks. |
