Subject: What size acoustic bass? From: PHJim Date: 24 Aug 13 - 02:31 PM I know that the majority of folk/bluegrass/country/rockabilly upright bass players use 3/4 instruments, but was wondering what size jazz players like Ray Brown used. |

Subject: RE: What size acoustic bass? From: Phil Cooper Date: 25 Aug 13 - 01:15 PM I remember reading an article about a jazz bass player named Ron Carter, who played what was called a Picolo Bass. It was smaller, but I didn't look up the details of why it was different. |

Subject: RE: What size acoustic bass? From: Phil Cooper Date: 25 Aug 13 - 01:20 PM I just punched in picolo bass on youtube and saw this clip featuring Ron Carter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRVjiK315GY if you copy and paste the link in on youtube, it should go there. They also had some electric basses called picolo's, but figure this is more of what you were asking about. |

Subject: RE: What size acoustic bass? From: JohnInKansas Date: 25 Aug 13 - 02:08 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRVjiK315GY Link The player to the left of the "picolo" appears to have a "full size" instrument, that the note calls a "contrabass." You have to go a little into the video to get enough light on the subject to see that the picolo bass doesn't go all the way to the floor, but it appears to be only a little larger in body size than a cello. While the 3/4 size is popular with travelling musicians, the most common size seen at "sessions" in my area is probably a 5/8, and a real 3/4 "looks huge" when one shows up, although it's hard for most people to tell the difference unless they've got both sizes side-by-side. For country/bluegrass music there's not a lot of difference in the sound, and smaller size is better for musicians who lack groupies to tote and carry, but any bass presents transportation difficulties somewhat like taking your mother-in-law to all your gigs. Subject: RE: What size acoustic bass? From: PHJim Date: 25 Aug 13 - 10:39 PM I have transported a few 3/4s and, in my Toyota Echo, we had to stick the head out the back window with a garbage bag over it. |
