Subject: What size acoustic bass? From: PHJim Date: 24 Aug 13 - 02:31 PM I know that the majority of folk/bluegrass/country/rockabilly upright bass players use 3/4 instruments, but was wondering what size jazz players like Ray Brown used. |

They also had some electric basses called picolo's, but figure this is more of what you were asking about. |

You have to go a little into the video to get enough light on the subject to see that the picolo bass doesn't go all the way to the floor, but it appears to be only a little larger in body size than a cello. While the 3/4 size is popular with travelling musicians, the most common size seen at "sessions" in my area is probably a 5/8, and a real 3/4 "looks huge" when one shows up, although it's hard for most people to tell the difference unless they've got both sizes side-by-side. For country/bluegrass music there's not a lot of difference in the sound, and smaller size is better for musicians who lack groupies to tote and carry, but any bass presents transportation difficulties somewhat like taking your mother-in-law to all your gigs.
