Subject: Obit: Elmore Leonard (1925-2013) From: Little Hawk Date: 20 Aug 13 - 06:50 PM It's in the news that Elmore Leonard has passed away, due to complications from a stroke. He may have been America's finest modern crime fiction writer, as well as writing the best, most realistic cowboy novels I've ever read (which was earlier in his career). Thanks, Elmore, for all the wonderful reading you afforded your many fans over the past 5 or 6 decades! |

Subject: RE: Obit: Elmore Leonard (1925-2013) From: Little Hawk Date: 20 Aug 13 - 11:54 PM I think his advice about writing is very good...specially if you want to write like Elmore Leonard...and if you want to trim out all the unnecessary verbiage. I don't necessarily think it's the only way of achieving good writing, though. There are some other styles of writing that are good too, despite breaking some of his rules, and they probably appeal to a different set of readers. For the kind of books he wrote, though, he's right on the mark. (Just thinking of Amos's recent book "Beyond the Cascade". I think he does a number of things Leonard advises not to do in his 10 points of advice about writing...and I still think Amos's book is terrific, regardless.) |

My father-in-law loaned them to Mr. Leonard a couple of years ago to help with some "Justified" material. |

Subject: RE: Obit: author Elmore Leonard (1925-2013) From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 Aug 13 - 02:04 PM A friend of ours posted a story at Facebook after he learned of Leonard's passing -- "I was sure our tiny plane wasn't going to make it. The wind had come up over the infamously treacherous Telluride landing strip, and was tossing us around like an old leaf. This was before 9/11, and the cockpit was separated from the cabin by only a thin fabric curtain, which I noticed was hanging at roughly sixty degrees, revealing the young pilot inside with his left foot on the console heaving with all his might on the yoke. Realizing I was about to die without my hat on, I unbuckled myself, and lurched up to the storage compartment to retrieve my fedora, and squashed it down on my head. Falling back into my seat, I resecured myself, looking around to see if the stewardess was going make trouble. Elmore Leonard, across the aisle and two rows behind, silently raised his thumb. RIP." I'm glad for both Trevor and Elmore Leonard that the plane landed safely. I hope Trevor doesn't mind me sharing this story. Linn |
