Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: Penny S. Date: 16 Aug 13 - 05:07 PM Wish I had had one last Tuesday when the white box van turned left across me from the right hand lane at the traffic lights and clipped my right wing. Cost so far, £50 deposit on courtesy car, £142 more on my insurance premium for the new year which started Thursday, increase on excess on that policy from £150 to £250. Excess due on repair £200. The driver sort of acknowledged fault, but I haven't heard yet any confirmation of it. I thought of getting one when I saw the footage of the Russian meteorite, but found they were about £40 and only kept 1 hour of footage on the SD card before overwriting it. It was in a shop called Maplins over here (bit like Tandy/Radio Shack), and it wasn't called a dash cam. A VGA Journey Recorder is what it was called. Sales page There are other much more expensive ones, but look at the reviews. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: Richard Bridge Date: 17 Aug 13 - 02:39 AM I want one too. I think the point about the 1 hour capacity is taht you take the card out immediately after the accident and then you have the retained record. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: GUEST,BobL Date: 17 Aug 13 - 03:47 AM Bear in mind that "a windscreen sticker or other obstruction encroaching more than 40mm" is an MoT fail point. This allows enough room for a small camera: a bigger unit may be OK if, from the driver's viewpoint, it can be hidden behind the mirror. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Aug 13 - 10:51 AM I've seen interesting video on YouTube taking from dash cams of drivers in Russia. I wonder if it has caught on in some parts of the world more than others? SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: gnu Date: 17 Aug 13 - 04:29 PM SRS... I assume so in the more techy parts of the world. Apparently, there is debate as to whether such cams should be legislated against. Such seems an infringement of freedom, given the penchant for governments to advocate the use of "security cams" on every street corner. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: Richard Bridge Date: 18 Aug 13 - 04:50 AM What is the purported justification for banning them? I have seen no such debate. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: gnu Date: 18 Aug 13 - 05:04 AM Privacy has been put forth as the issue by some Russian politicians. I have no source. Heard it mentioned on a couple of You Tube vids. One was from Russia Today, I think. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: Mr Red Date: 29 Oct 13 - 06:15 AM this is the one I bought It sort of does the job but remember: 1) it obscures a bit of vision however small it is, so I tried to put it behind the rear-view mirror and it would benefit from being further forward on its mounting. 2) the quality of the video is not good enough to read licence plates 3) it overwrites old recordings when the memory card is full, and can run on with battery (say 5 mins) when the power goes off, thus documenting the gesticulations and maybe the conversations of the other driver (who is certainly at fault). It records sound so watch your language! 3) this one does not have not have ferrites &/or capacitors in the lead to prevent emi. Adding ferrites doesn't help either. It affects my FM car radio reception pretty much. In my locale - Stroud (aka the 5 Valleys) this is very important. 4) I haven't had an accident since, but then I didn't during the previous 30 years. 5) For the price of a good meal for 2 it is brilliant insurance. Even if delivery is a month. 6) It is not too bad at night, but rain on the windscreen does hamper video a bit, especially at night. But see 5). |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: Mr Red Date: 29 Oct 13 - 06:27 AM FWIW Although I removed the power lead, mine did not get any attention from the MOT boys (mandatory yearly vehicle testing in UK). Part behind mirror. I have set mine to record 15 mins of which 5 mins are over-run. The total amount of recordings is set by the 16 Gb SD card and you only need one video for the purpose, but I can go back many days, the card is permanently full but always records "today". In an accident the 15 mins should be enough to cover the event and the inevitable excuses. If Mr Plod saw your camera it would constitute incontrovertible evidence of speeding so you have to behave! Which I always do since the **** camera got me! |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 29 Oct 13 - 04:09 PM this one does not have not have ferrites &/or capacitors in the lead to prevent emi. "Well of course you wouldn't want that... " But what on earth does it mean?? |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: gnu Date: 29 Oct 13 - 07:23 PM McGrath... "It affects my FM car radio reception pretty much." So, it sucks. I think. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: GUEST,BobL Date: 30 Oct 13 - 05:41 AM "...does not have not have ferrites &/or capacitors in the lead to prevent emi ... It affects my FM car radio reception pretty much." (EMI = Electro-Magnetic Interference) That sounds a bit naughty. In Europe, electronics products are supposed to have a CE mark showing they conform to laid-down standards, which in the case of EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) are quite stringent. OTOH, interference could still happen if the radio aerial is too near the camera, e.g. camera on the upper windscreen and aerial on the roof just above. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: Mr Red Date: 30 Oct 13 - 10:05 AM Electromagnetic interference. It is definitely leaking from the lead not the unit per se, because when I pull the plug the interference vanishes. If I had to pin point it I would say it is coming from the switching regulator in the plug. I will try cutting the cable and wiring a capacitor across, one day. The unit comes from China (at that price) - if the seller is in the UK ask about ferrites & EMC. On the privacy aspect, UK law, as I understand it, is that: the taking of photographs of anyone is not illegal, it is at the reproduction thereof when the law kicks-in. And you only have to prove permission from one person in the shot to make it legal. I would have to assume that video was similar. On private property any security camera has to be clearly visible by law. Hiding the camera inside a house is illegal (think perverts). Who knows if that applies to vehicles, but a good lawyer would probably make a case. Once the police are aware of "evidence" I suspect the statutes that then apply are classed as criminal, not civil. As far as the police are concerned they would be the reproducers. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: GUEST,kendall Date: 30 Oct 13 - 04:02 PM The rear view mirror also blocks vision. Remote cameras have solved many crimes, so, I'm in favor. I just wont commit any crimes in public. Simple. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dash cam... what do you have/want? From: GUEST,Ed T Date: 31 Oct 13 - 07:14 PM Beware of the unintentional recording of "in car BJs" while you drive. Just thought I would mention that, just in case it is a factor to consider. Your partner may get wind of your frequent drives in the country. :) |
