At Sidmouth this last week, we had young Maisie (6) from Flook, dancing all around the stage while her parents played a longish set. The style was sheer abandon, skipping in time to the music, but with lots of arm-flinging and even air-punching! Last year (or maybe year before) we had Eliza Carthy's daughter up there. And a couple of years back we had a Norwegian band in Edinburgh, whose son (4 or 5) played snare drum and cymbal, while his sister (2 or 3) played shaker, both very solemn-faced but in perfect time! Walking into a place where you didn't know a festival was on: happened to us in N Spain. A huge troop of gaiteros and drummers marched down the street, all dressed very strikingly in black and white. And going back a lot longer, seeing members of Blowzabella just playing for anyone who would listen on Sidmouth promenade. |

From: Ebbie Date: 10 Aug 13 - 03:02 PM One memorable festival moment for me was at my first Getaway at Camp Ramblewood when at an evening concert suddenly all over the auditorium voices, male, female, high, low, growly, lyrical, rose in harmony. The sound was dense, palpable, murmuring, surrounding me with layers, absolute layers of sound. Shall never forget it. |

It would be about 1969/70 at the Cambridge Folk Festival that one of the performers in a large marquee divided the whole audience into three groups, then we all sang in beautiful harmony - "Clementine", to the tune of "Cwm Rhondda"! That was one of those moments. |

From: Acorn4 Date: 11 Aug 13 - 04:50 AM At Sidmouth a few years back we were sitting on the promenade just practising, when a bloke came up and asked if he could borrow the guitar to do a song - I duly obliged and he did a very good version of "Me and Bobby McGhee" - he then said "Thanks, I'd better get back to work now", and ran to catch up with his team on the dustcart, from which he'd taken time out to do the song. |

We chatted for a few minutes before she went on stage to do a surprise (for the audience) duo with one of the singers from the Cambridge FC. Absolutely magical. |

From: Tattie Bogle Date: 13 Aug 13 - 04:15 AM Another Sidmouth one: Lulo Reinhardt walked into a session, sat down on the only free stool next to me, and asked to borrow my guitar. I knew who he was from the festival publicity, and suggested he borrow a better one than mine (battered old session type!), but no, mine would do. He got just an amazing sound out of it, and also made another sessioner's century as they jammed and jazzed along together. |

From: GUEST,Guest Michael Harrison Date: 13 Aug 13 - 07:50 PM A few years back, at the North Texas Irish Festival, the rumors started flying around on Sunday that Altan was coming in to play one set. I sort of blew it off and ignored it until one of the festival directors came up to me and asked if the band I was with at that time would mind giving up our set to allow Altan to perform. The situation was that if we didn't give way to Altan then we would be on stage at the same time they were. I don't ever want to miss Altan, no way, never, ever. They weren't scheduled to appear, but, they like our festival and when a Sunday came open they rang us up and BINGO - winners all around. A great set, by the way. |

From: Pete Jennings Date: 14 Aug 13 - 07:30 AM Another time at Cambridge (2005), there was a young girl (about seven or eight years old?) and her mum waiting in the queue to sign up for a 15 minute spot in the Club Tent stage. They were eleventh in the queue, with only ten spots available for the public. They were really disappointed. Being an ex-member of St. Neots FC, who run the Saturday evening session, I had been granted a club spot so I made a suggestion: I'd do a quick couple of numbers and they could have the last eight minutes or so. Christine (mum) and Poppy they were called and they went down a storm. Magical moment even now, just remembering it. |

A very different but magical performance. |

It was pouring rain, but I really wanted to see a workshop with the late Gambel Rogers, story teller and guitarist extraordinaire and mandolin whiz Don Stiernberg. There were three musicians on stage, Gambel, Don and Don's guitarist. Maggie and I were huddled under a tree in yellow slickers; the only audience members. Gambel said, "Come on up here where it's dry. No point sitting in the rain." Maggie and I went up on the stage and we sat in a circle, talking and playing. I noticed some chord patterns that both guitar players were using and said, "Did you guys have the black and yellow Mickey Baker Jazz guitar book?" They sure did and we spent the next half hour talking about Mickey's book and how he'd give you shit, saying, "If you don't understand this, then you need to go back and spend another week on last week's lesson," or, "Learn these progressions in G, then transpose them into 11 other keys..." |

From: Acorn4 Date: 15 Aug 13 - 04:20 AM Once again at Sidmouth some years back, after managing to shoehorn ourselves into the Bedford late on a Saturday night - the session had become loud, drunken and lowest common denominator by this stage - a bloke came staggering out of the bar with a huge grin on his face like a Cheshire cat, swaying and carrying his guitar in one hand by its neck - the guitar had two strings left on it. |

Some of the musicians started playing and we all sang "Hard Times Come Again No More". The acoustics under that bridge are amazing! I hope somebody recorded it because it was one incredible session. |

Late in the Darlington Mummers Friday night slot at the Victoria, Saltburn it was the turn of a very pretty teenager singing tentatively it seemed in front of her young friends. But what a revelation when she sang, John Riley, largely as Joan Baez's interpretation, with an outstandingly beautiful voice. Magic. |
