Subject: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: Ebbie Date: 02 Aug 13 - 02:34 PM I have two cell phones; one I use for making long distance calls. My Samsung/long distance phone is used very little and the battery has stayed 'up'. So I didn't recharge it. Then yesterday I spoke on it for an hour. At the end of the conversation the phone 'beeped' several times and I connected it to the charger. NOW: It did not recharge and it says 'low battery, Powering off' and it goes dead. Any he'p out there? |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: Greg F. Date: 02 Aug 13 - 04:57 PM Time to get a new battery. They don't last forever; only have a certain # of charge cycles before they go dead, plus if NiCad, without regular charge/discharge cycles (only on stand-by) they go dead faster. New battery should be pretty inexpensive. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 02 Aug 13 - 05:21 PM I imagine you tried disconnecting it and taking the battery out and then putting it back and plugging in the charger? That has worked with me. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: GUEST,Jon Date: 02 Aug 13 - 06:04 PM Does the phone give an indication that it is actually charging when you plug it in? Chargers and usb cables can break. If you can eliminate that possibility, I'd be inclined to go along with Greg. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: Ebbie Date: 02 Aug 13 - 07:14 PM Thanks, guys. Kevin, just now I disconnected it and removed and reinserted the battery then reconnected it. No change. No, Jon. It gives no indication that it is charging when I plug it in. So I guess the next step is a new battery? Dang. This phone is less than two months old. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: GUEST,Jon Date: 02 Aug 13 - 08:32 PM If it's less than two months old (at least in the UK - it might be different in the US) I'd be looking to return it under warranty. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 02 Aug 13 - 09:10 PM And it could be the charger that's gone wrong. But if it's the phone, after only two months, even if you haven't been recharging it, if it's died it's a defective phone. Or perhaps a defective battery. Whichever it is, it ought to be replaced free, I'd think. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: JohnInKansas Date: 02 Aug 13 - 09:25 PM Nothing happens when you connect the charger to the phone? Does anything happen when you unplug and replug the charger into the wall socket? Does anything else work when plugged into that wall socket? If both of your phones have the same connector for charging, does the other phone charge when you connect it to that charger? Over the past 15 years or so we've had four phones, more or less "two at a time." I've seen no battery failures, although one currently in use takes "less than original" charge and I have a battery ready to replace the one that's in it. I've had THREE charger failures. It can be difficult to find a cause for a charger failure, but the cord between the wall-wart and the phone, or the connector at the phone end, are the main suspects. The connectors commonly used are too tiny for easy inspection, and chargers (the cheap ones we use) are $10 - $15 (US) while a battery is about $40, so I've generally tried another charger first. (None of our phones was more than $25 new.) Some batteries (Lithium-Ion) do include internal monitoring and control systems. If the battery is discharged below the "never-never" charge level, recharging may be unsafe so the monitoring system can permanently disable the battery, preventing it from ever being recharged. The phone should turn itself off well before the battery discharges to this level, but the monitoring system continues to dribble out some low level power. If the phone shuts down due to low battery charge and is not recharged reasonably soon, the battery may reach "dead" level and be permanently disabled. (i.e. "it's supposed to commit suicide in some cases.") This "feature" could explain (some) unexpected/premature battery failures, so battery replacement may be what you need. John |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: Ebbie Date: 02 Aug 13 - 10:48 PM I have an appointment downtown on Monday anyway so I'll drop in at the shop and see what they have to say. Appreciate the help, everybody. Nothin' like the Cats one finds in the Mud. :) |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: ChanteyLass Date: 03 Aug 13 - 09:56 PM A friend has had the same cell phone for years and also did away with her landline soon after she acquired her cell phone. She uses her phone often and for long periods of time. Recently it did not hold a charge. She bought a new charger and now the phone is charging and holding the charge. Add me to those who think this is a possibility for your phone's problem. Let us know what the people at the shop have to say. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: JohnInKansas Date: 08 Aug 13 - 06:05 AM So now you need to find out if a circuit breaker tripped, or if some varmint chawed a hole in a wire. ???? (I'm sure we have people here with experience with both possibilities. We'll have to see what suggestions come up to know if any of us actually know anything useful.) John |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: Greg F. Date: 08 Aug 13 - 08:55 AM Ooops. No blush necessary. These things happen. Trust it to usually be the more complicated/expensive option. Easy fix/replacement usually, but suggest you get an electrician in if you're not familiar with electrical repair, esp. if dealing with British 240 volts. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: Ebbie Date: 08 Aug 13 - 10:51 AM Thanks. I have already reported it to maintenance. I don't know if it is a relay outlet- it seems to be the only one out of order. The funny thing is that I had been using it regularly- it is one that is connected to a light switch. What fooled me is forgetting that a mobile phone has its own internal lighting system, so when the light came on I thought it was the outlet kicking in... |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 08 Aug 13 - 10:04 PM Yesterday I found my PC display had gone wrong and I couldn't see the start button, or get at the list of programs and so forth. I tried doing a restore, and explored options in settings I'd never tried before, all to no avail. Then I pushed a button on the monitor, and everything immediately sorted itself. Very often it's the simplest thing that turns out to be the problem. Bulbs, fuses, plugs, switches, petrol... |

Subject: RE: BS: Re-starting Cel/mobile phone From: Ebbie Date: 09 Aug 13 - 02:43 AM I know. Technicians have told me that the first thing they do on a service call is check to see whether the machine is plugged in. |
