Subject: BS: Aurora Canada: Churchill or Yellowknife? From: Rapparee Date: 28 Jul 13 - 08:53 PM My wife and I are planning an "Aurora Tour" to Canada, quite possibly with friends, in February. Both Churchill and Yellowknife offer them. Which, in the opinion of you Canadians out there (and you know who you are!), would be the better choice? (Skarpi, I'm working on Iceland.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Aurora Canada: Churchill or Yellowknife? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 28 Jul 13 - 10:14 PM "The dark of the moon in March." This article from the Geophysical Institute may help. http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AlaskaForecast/TravelersGuide The article emphasizes Fairbanks, but the map shows the Canadian locations as well. I recommend Churchill. The Churchill Northern Studies Centre will give advice and information. Also the polar bears! (Haven't checked the best time for them). My experience is on the Mackenzie River, doing field work years ago. I have been in Fairbanks and seen them there, and James Bay, but I have not been to Churchill. Fairbanks, by the way, has good hotels and inns; if you are not set on a Canadian site, Fairbanks is a nice little city. |

Subject: RE: BS: Aurora Canada: Churchill or Yellowknife? From: Ebbie Date: 28 Jul 13 - 10:15 PM Rap, if you go to Churchill, Manitoba, in November, say, you will have a good chance to see the amazing sight of multiple white bears in addition to the lights. (Don't know about February.) What is there in the YT's Yellowknife besides the Northern Lights? You can see them - when they are 'out'- just about any place up here. The most important factor in viewing is an unlit sky. Yellowknife has about 20,000 in population while Churchill has yet to hit 1,000. Guess which has more light poles? (My obvious bias can be laid to wanting to see the bears!) |
