Subject: RE: Origins: General Taylor's gained the day From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 21 Jul 13 - 08:58 AM General Taylor was the one who defeated Santa Anna, discussed just recently. Stormy was reckoned to be a ship owner according to Hugil. I will look it up when I get home, except someone will beat me to it. |

Subject: RE: Origins: General Taylor's gained the day From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 22 Jul 13 - 09:11 AM John Samson. Mr. Stormalong "I have heard that the prototype of this noble shanty was old John Willis, a famous early Victorian London ship master and owner, whose son was the John Willis known as Old White Hat, and who will be remembered chiefly as the owner of the famous Cutty Sark." Hugill acknowledges the story but does not believe it. He was sure it was of "negro origin." |
