It depends on what they're doing. It can happen when they roll on their back or side or when they toss their head a certain way. Then they toss their head back the other way, and the ears go back to "natural" position. Dachshund water race!!! At least one of these dogs is a champion swimmer who knows how to win the gold medal. The sad thing is that Spaw has never had the joy of owning a Dachshund. I expect he'll show up at some point to pretend he's okay with that. ;-) |

I wondered about the ears because I've seen owners fold dogs' ears back at dog shows to protect them from noise. The dog race is a really cute video, but I suspect the doxies didn't race to win, they raced to get out of the pool. In a perfect world, doxies could post videos about 'weird things humans do to dachshunds.' |

I guess it would help to fold the ears back, because the large, flat surface of the floppy ear probably acts as a sound receiver, rather like the diaphragm of a microphone or a speaker. The bigger the ear flap, the more amplification, I suppose. Elephants must have incredible hearing. ;-) There are more than a few Dachshunds who actually do enjoy swimming, specially in hot weather when it helps them cool down. I'd say the chances were 50/50 that the various Dachshunds in the video were in fact racing to win...although the blonde one didn't seem to get the concept very well. They are quite competitive by nature, and enthusiastic about games, so it's quite possible that they got the idea of the race. Yes, they could indeed post plenty of videos about weird things humans do to Dachshunds. |

LH - thanks for the warning about the ugly music. It's interesting to see the doxies on the floating boards, but their goal is not to enjoy the water. Their goal is to 'GET THE CHEW TOY!' But, Little Hawk, let me level with you. The true purpose of all those videos, and of making dachshunds go into pools, is to hide it that the PEOPLE are not in the pools. Why do people in hot, dry climates insist on owning expensive pools which they never go into? When I was a kid in Wisconsin, the county owned huge swimming pools, and on hot summer days, we would spend hours there, playing in the water every way we could think of. Can you jump off? Can you dive off? Can you swim underwater? Can you swim underwater upside down? Will you brave the high dive? (once was enough for me) By the time I was in high school, I thought swimming and playing in water was one of life's greatest, natural pleasures. It came as a shock to find that most people think a pool is a thing you sit by. Or else you fool your dachshund into going into it for you. Sad! |

I get the impression, though, that the Dachshunds are enjoying their swim. They just want a challenge. An objective. Something to strive for. And the chew toy is the challenge. Every Dachshund wants a challenge. It could be... Get the chew toy! Kill the lawn sprinkler! Get the chipmunk! Get the Christmas turkey off the dining table! Destroy the pillow! Find the stinking carrion and roll in it! Steal the candies! Dig out the Groundhog! Rob the garbage! These are the things that make a Dachshund's life worth living. |
