Subject: Lyr Req: Can't put that monkey on my back From: GUEST,Spoutnik Date: 28 Jun 13 - 08:51 AM Hi, im missing some lyrics for this great Riley Puckett song... Can someone help me? Can't Put That Monkey On My Back Riley Puckett Oh, you can't make me believe that good is evil And you can't make me believe that snow is black I won't believe that there's a storm in the shining monday morn' Now, you can't put that monkey on my back Oh, three o' clock this morning And I heard you when you sneak into the shack Oh, you said you stay up late swinging on the garden gate But you can't put that monkey on my back Oh, I saw you in the cafe with a fellow And you said you just drop in for a snack But the fellow name was Fred and your cousin Fred is dead Now you can't put that monkey on my back Oh, you said that you was going to your grand-ma But your grand-ma don't live close the railroad tracks Baby, there's another thing, she don't buy you diamond ring Now you can't put that monkey on my back Oh, you love me when I have a lot of money And now that my money is gettin' flat Oh, you said that you'd be true but I know just what you'll do Now you can't put that monkey on my back Oh, you said you went to visit your mother When kind of flat Just to make it short and brief you know, your mother's on relief Now you can't put that monkey on my back And now, that my song is nearly ending I goodbye I've been singing for awhile and manipulate for awhile Just to pile in those monkeys on my back |

Subject: Lyr Add: CAN'T PUT THAT MONKEY ON MY BACK (Puckett From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 Jun 13 - 11:42 PM I listened to this on Spotify. Here's how I hear it: CAN'T PUT THAT MONKEY ON MY BACK As sung by Riley Puckett 1. Oh, you can't make me believe that good is evil, And you can't make me believe that snow is black. I won't believe that there's a storm when the sun is shining warm. Now, you can't put that monkey on my back. 2. Oh, I lay awake till three o'clock this morning, And I heard you when you sneaked into the shack. Oh, you said you stayed up late swinging on the garden gate, But you can't put that monkey on my back. 3. Oh, I saw you in the cafe with a fellow, And you said you just dropped in for a snack, But the fellow's name was Fred and your cousin Fred is dead. Now you can't put that monkey on my back. 4. Oh, you said that you was going to your grandma's, But your grandma don't live 'cross the railroad tracks. Baby, there's another thing: she don't buy you diamond rings. Now you can't put that monkey on my back. 5. Oh, you loved me when I had a lot of money, And now that my money's gettin' flat, Oh, you say that you'd be true but I know just what you'll do. Now you can't put that monkey on my back. 6. Oh, you said you went to visit your mother. When you went, you went and left me kind of flat. Just to make it short and brief, you know, your mother's on relief. Now you can't put that monkey on my back. 7. And now, that my song is nearly ended, I'll bid you one and all a fond goodbye. I'll be singing for awhile and heavy-laden for awhile, Just a-pilin' those monkeys on my back. |

Subject: Lyr Add: YOU CAN'T PUT THAT MONKEY ON MY BACK From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Jun 13 - 10:06 AM I like this version better. It has a bouncy rockabilly rhythm. But the recording I listened to on Spotify had a serious skip after verse 3. I don't know how much is missing. Whoever heard of that happening on a Spotify recording? I can't find another recording anywhere else, so here's the part I can hear: YOU CAN'T PUT THAT MONKEY ON MY BACK As sung by Hank Thompson 1. You can't make me believe that good is evil, You can't make me believe that snow is black. You can't tell me there's a storm when the sun is bright and warm. No, you can't put that monkey on my back. 2. Now, you said you went to visit your dear mother, That she was gonna let you have some jack. But just to make it brief, your poor mother's on relief. Now you can't put that monkey on my back. 3. You said you went to visit your dear grandma, But your grandma don't live 'cross that railroad track. Baby, there's another thing: she don't give you diamond rings. And you can't put that monkey on my back. ...now I'm leavin' My overshoes and clothes I'm gonna pack, For if I keep hangin' 'round, baby, you'll just wear me down By pilin' all those monkeys on my back. |

Subject: Lyr Add: YOU CAN'T PUT THAT MONKEY ON MY BACK From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Jun 13 - 10:49 AM This jazzy version is also fun: YOU CAN'T PUT THAT MONKEY ON MY BACK As sung by Frankie 'Half-Pint' Jaxon 1. You can't make me believe that good is evil. You can't make believe that snow is black. You can't tell me there's a storm when the sun is bright and warm. Oh, you can't put that monkey on my back. 2. You leave me all alone 'most ev'ry evenin', And run around with Tom, Bill, and Jack. After you have had your fun, you say I'm the only one. Oh, you can't put that ringtail on my back. 3. I lay awake till three o'clock this mornin', And I heard you when you sneaked into this shack. You told me you stayed out late swingin' on the garden gate. [Spoken:] Ah, go on, jig(?)! Go on! Don't hand me that jive! 4. I saw you in the cafe with a fellow. You said you only stopped in for a snack, And the man was cousin Fred; you said cousin Fred was dead! [Spoken:] Hm-hm! What you tryin' to hand me? Ha-ha! Lord! 5. You told me you went to see your grandma, But your grandma don't live 'cross the railroad track. Baby, here's another thing: she don't leave you diamond rings. [Spoken:] Oh, go on! Get on out o' my face! 6. You said you'd gonna visit your dear old mother, But I know you're leavin' and ain't coming back. Now to make this short and sweet, your dear mother is on relief. Baby, can't put that monkey on my back. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can't Put That Monkey on My Back (Puckett From: GUEST,Mike Yates Date: 17 Sep 20 - 08:55 AM The Shelton Brother's 1938 recording of this song (Decca 5609A) lists the songwriters as: Hy Heath, Bill Hally & Al Bernard. Heath (born 1890 in Tennessee - died 1965) and Bernard (1888-1949) were both well-known composers and performers. Don't know who Hally was, though. |
