Subject: BS: Websites forever being 'upgraded' From: Will Fly Date: 08 Jun 13 - 09:33 AM A grump from an Old Grump. I like my websites to stay as they are, on the whole. I check sites like YouTube, Vimeo and SoundCloud regularly - either to upload something or to look for something. I'm a creature of habit. Then - just when I've settled comfortably into the routine of using these sites - pow! - yet another change. Another "better" look, another magnificent "upgrade" - more bells and more whistles. Very rarely do these upgrades and changes seem to make the site any better than it was - in the case of Soundcloud, for example, it seems to be even harder to navigate. The New Look on YouTube now means (unless I'm utterly dim) that I can't do a search specifically on my own channel for one of my videos. No big deal, you might think, but I happen to have put up a lot of stuff on YT over the years. The only way I can find anything specific if a general YouTube search doesn't bring it up quickly, is to go through my damned channel things, page by page. I really believe that the Young Turks who mastermind these sites - the "creative teams" change them for change's sake. Perhaps to look "cutting edge" - perhaps because they have to be seen to be evolving and dynamic. Bollocks, say I. But hey - there's still gold in them thar hills - Mudcat looks almost exactly as it did when I first found it all those years ago... Now I'm happy. |

Subject: RE: BS: Websites forever being 'upgraded' From: Bat Goddess Date: 08 Jun 13 - 09:53 AM I get just as annoyed because usually I never see any sort of actual improvement in the new version. Just different. And the other problem is it is usually something that bloats the site or uses a newer version of technology that is unavailable on my aging computer. Instead of making the website more accessible to more people, it ends up excluding former happy users until they shell out more money for a bigger, better, faster machine. And not everyone can afford to do that. Back when I was doing digital prepress print production software upgrades annoyed me no end. Usually no added utility (or few) but they'd do stupid things like change a one handed toggle (for something you use hundreds of times a day) to a three keystroke command, basically making more work. And you HAD to upgrade because the clients would. And then, eventually, because each upgrade (and in order to continue making money, most companies offered an upgrade every year or so) demanded more RAM, etc., you'd HAVE to upgrade the computer. You know, I can pick up a book from the 1600s (and I own several) and read it just fine. If I've got a computer file from three or four years ago, there's a fairly good chance it can't be opened or even translated into a more recent version. Don't get me started... Linn Linn |

Subject: RE: BS: Websites forever being 'upgraded' From: Rapparee Date: 08 Jun 13 - 10:59 AM Aw, yer just a bunch of old fogies. I'll bet you still write with a pointed reed on papyrus! Probably have "books" in your house that are made from dead trees, too. Do you "oft outwatch the bear" by candlelight as well? Well, daddy-o, them days are over. Get hep, cat! Get with the jive! Microfilm is where it's at, cat! And toss them wax cylinders, 'cause wire recording is the thing, Bing. And about them pens -- have you heard about the electric typewriter? Yeah, it's clunky and big, but it's fast. You oughtta try it. So get out your slipstickk and start working to join the Modern World -- shucks, they say we'll have flying cars by 1965! Cool, huh? |

Subject: RE: BS: Websites forever being 'upgraded' From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 08 Jun 13 - 12:30 PM I can understand why things you pay for get changed all the time, because it's a way of getting you to pay gor them over and iver again. But I'm puzzled why it also heppens to all those free programs we use. I suppose the programmerget some advantage because they get paid for doing the work, but there's no extra cash comes in as a result. No extra adverts and no extra users either. I'm sure at leaat as many people get turned off by the changes as get attracted by them. |

Subject: RE: BS: Websites forever being 'upgraded' From: Jack the Sailor Date: 09 Jun 13 - 04:26 PM I guess it would be silly to point out that most of the recent changes in websites are to accommodate "new media" so that they can be accessed from Twitter and Facebook etc on iPhones and iPads and other "smart" devices. |

Subject: RE: BS: Websites forever being 'upgraded' From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 09 Jun 13 - 10:03 PM I refuse to be a TwitterTwat. I suppose one of these days I should find out what an iphone is. |

Subject: RE: BS: Websites forever being 'upgraded' From: Will Fly Date: 10 Jun 13 - 08:34 AM I don't think the latest changes to YouTube have much to do with Twitter, etc. - those were done some time ago. |

Subject: RE: BS: Websites forever being 'upgraded' From: Will Fly Date: 10 Jun 13 - 12:52 PM If you're familiar with YouTube and SoundCloud - as I am - the layouts have had several and, to my mind, pointless, changes quite recently. If you're not a regular user, i.e. uploader, of these sites, then those changes may be less apparent to you. The total age of the sites has no bearing on the frequency of the alterations. |

Subject: RE: BS: Websites forever being 'upgraded' From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 10 Jun 13 - 01:18 PM Will, I have cussed about several of the changes. A Luddite with regard to the "WWB" (world-wide web), they confuse me. |
