Subject: Padstow Speed Boat accident From: GUEST Date: 05 May 13 - 05:35 PM Just heard on the news that there was a bad speed boat accident in Padstow Harbour this afternoon. A 51 year old guy and his 8 year old daughter were killed and 4 other injured. Are all our Folk Family OK? Rhiannon |

Subject: RE: Padstow Speed Boat accident From: GUEST Date: 05 May 13 - 07:55 PM It was Rib type boat with an outboard motor not a speed boat the driver may not have had the lanyard attached to his wrist which would have cut the engine when he went over so the boat kept circling and running over those in the water according to locals it appears anyone with money can buy one of these boats there appears to be no licence required. a tragic accident, the town was very subdued this tea time. thoughts go out to the survivors who were all very seriously injured |

Subject: RE: Padstow Speed Boat accident From: gnomad Date: 06 May 13 - 06:54 AM BBC news item It seems to have been a Londoner, Nicholas Milligan, and his family. No other water users/craft reportedly involved, until a ski instructor managed to get aboard and bring the boat under control. The survivors sound to be in a pretty bad way also, two dead is too many anyway, but one hopes that there will be no more. Is there a definition which rules out RIBs from being called speed boats? Some of them are seriously fast, outboard-powered or not, and the pictures show a pretty big engine hanging off the stern of that one. |

Subject: RE: Padstow Speed Boat accident From: Charmion Date: 06 May 13 - 07:18 AM By RIB, do you mean a rigid-hulled inflatable boat? |

Subject: RE: Padstow Speed Boat accident From: gnomad Date: 06 May 13 - 07:59 AM Yes, Charmion, that's a term widely used in UK at least. Comes from Rigid(hulled) Inflatable Boat. Fast ones are widely called speedboats, but our guest of 7.55 appears to know differently, and I am willing to learn. Guest's point about what is often called the 'dead man' switch is well made. Correctly functioning and used, such a device might have prevented at least some of the damage to people, but it is early to be making judgements. |

Subject: RE: Padstow Speed Boat accident From: JohnInKansas Date: 06 May 13 - 06:47 PM Some years ago a talk on boat safety by a fellow from the Kansas Fish and Game department provided the information that close to 80% of drowning victimes from boating accidents had their pants unzipped when recovered. His recommendation was that all boaters should always carry at least one EMPTY beer can so they won't try to p*ss over the side. (I think they'd already given up on getting people to use a deadman switch.) No occupation or pastime has a monopoly on stupidity, and even minimal impairment can cause an accident - especially in a boat. John |
