Lord Mandelson, Peter Mandelson that was, was on the BBC Today Programme this morning reminiscing about the one and only time he ever met Thatcher.

"She came up to me and she said I've got one thing to say to you my boy, she said: you can't trust the Irish they're all liars, she said, liars, and that's what you have to remember so just don't forget it."

Mandelson had just been made Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

The public persona of Margaret Hilda Thatcher was pretty horrible, but just now and again the mask slipped to reveal an infinitely more twisted and sickening bigot underneath. Her dalliance with Pinochet was a case in point. So was her opposition to sanctions against apartheid. So too were some off the cuff remarks she made about the "Indian race" being barbaric and uncivilised. This was in response to her seeing the famous automaton, Tipu's Tiger.

Now, it turns out that she condemned the entire Irish nation as a race of liars. What was that she said on the steps of ten Downing Street? "Where there is discord, may we bring harmony."

Come the revolution, we'll find the biggest Irish navvy in the land and give him the pleasure of digging up Thatcher's coffin. Then he can kick the fucking thing into matchwood, and her corpse with it.

Calm down Fred, the sainted Maggie should know the truth, but there again she was probably the worst lying hypocrite in the land, she had the gall to tell the Polish Government that they HAD to listen to the trade unions, what a cunt.

Can't disagree with pointing out her hypocrisy but two things spring to mind-

1. Pointing out she lumped all people as being the same and stereotyping is a bit rich coming from those who think all tories are cunts and those who dismiss chippy socialism are lackeys.

2. You were doing well till you mentioned the glorious revolution Wolfie...

Musket. When or where have I ever said all tories are cunts? I've known a lot of tories in my time, including a lot of local politicians and I've found many of them to be perfectly charming people, as sincere in their beliefs as I am in mine.

The people I object to are not the people who vote tory because they think it's best for the country. It's the people who vote tory because they think it's best for them. IE., the bankers, the financiers, the asset strippers, and the people who bleed this country dry while making sure their wealth is well stuffed in corners of the world where they won't have to pay tax on it.

Fred. I have never voted tory but I don't blame them for voting tory any more than I blame someone for voting labour.

Stereotyping is stereotyping is stereotyping. The conservative party and the Labour party have similar policies and similar views of social reform. Thatcher's comment to Mandleson was a personal prejudice which was wrong and despite her experiences, nota true reflection of those she was judging.

But we all are guilty of judging books by covers. You accuse her of being human. Ironically you are questioning why she wasn't a superhuman. ..

Thread is closed. I'd leave it open (if it doesn't get worse) if the OP were a member who could receive PMs so we could discuss the title AND the fact it could have all been put in one of the other Thatcher threads. co-moderator
