|
Subject: RE: BS: IsMilitantMentalMasturbationReligion? From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Apr 13 - 04:26 PM As a matter of fact John................. There was this roadhouse outside of Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, just north of Chattanooga on 27. Someone new came along in the early eighties and reopened this dive with a fresh coat of paint and a huge new professional looking sign out front. They called the place "Celebrate".......Sadly, the sign painter must have been paid ahead in trade, because one side was missing the "R".......still spelled wrong (Celebate)....... but somehow you just KNEW you weren't going to get any action in that joint! Subject: RE: BS: IsMilitantMentalMasturbationReligion? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 15 Apr 13 - 10:57 PM Here's my hypothesis. Atheism begins at Christmastime, when a ten-year-old boy can't sing 'heav'n,' as in 'Let heav'n and na-tu-u-re sing,'. He tries and fails while a pretty blonde girl in braids pretends not to notice. He sees her pretending not to notice, and it just kills him. Then Easter comes, and he can't sing 'th'apostles saw the living Lord.' In time he can't figure out which is correct, 'Thou wert' or 'Thou wast,' By that time he's twelve and he's done with religion. I blame all those pretty blonde girls. |

Subject: RE: BS: IsMilitantMentalMasturbationReligion? From: Little Hawk Date: 16 Apr 13 - 12:45 AM In my house atheism began at Day 1, but I don't recall anyone having problems with the traditional Christmas carols. My parents may have been atheists, but they weren't bloody fanatics about it. They didn't warn me against religion, they just never did anything at all either at home or outside of home in regards to religion. For example, it was never suggested that I do a bedtime prayer. Prayer was an unknown concept in our house. They instructed me to believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, of course, but they never said anything to me about Jesus. I find that kind of funny now. ;-D |

Subject: RE: BS: IsMilitantMentalMasturbationReligion? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 16 Apr 13 - 04:24 PM Hi, Little Hawk. I once read a library book by a woman who had studied children's beliefs about the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. Surprisingly, many little kids are afraid of Santa Claus. However, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy are regarded with real affection. Many (perhaps most) children know they are not real, but they like them anyway. Recently I read a book by a man who plays Santa Claus. He passed on the idea that Santa is frightening because the typical Santa Claus outfit covers him up too much. Between his glasses, beard, winter clothes and gloves, he hides too much of himself, and children can't 'read' him. He modified his costume to make that less of a problem. Santa Claus is Jesus' helper of course, There are no Santa Claus's out where nature is being red in tooth and claw. |

Subject: RE: BS: IsMilitantMentalMasturbationReligion? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 16 Apr 13 - 04:34 PM What scared me about Santa was all the list checking the spying and the blackmail. Its nice to get a gift, but as a bribe to conform to social norms of behavior? EB brought you stuff no matter what. The tooth fairy just paid for your teeth. Though I gotta say there was a while when I had nightmares about what he/she might be doing with them. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: IsMilitantMentalMasturbationReligion? From: Ed T Date: 16 Apr 13 - 04:45 PM Why wouldn"t kids be scared of Santa - he is a Coca-Cola USA capatilist concept. He has nothing to do with anything else, including Christ or any other deity. The capitalist message, that has sprtead globally is - the more fortunately rich your parents are, the bigger the gifts. Possibly a good life lesson - which has taken over Christmas (aka Xmas to the athiests). But, stick to the thread topic, drifty folks. If not, I will report you to the "big assed and kinda musically geeky" editors. It's "big M, Masterbation", not any of the small "m" stuff that you kluck-heads are post'in on. If that does not work, I will get my "catty" Mudcat buddy, gnu to piss in your comfy king-sided bed and tell you to FO, in clear terms (as the gnuster can clearly do, when it comes to thread titles and OP drift). |

Subject: RE: BS: IsMilitantMentalMasturbationReligion? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 17 Apr 13 - 09:21 AM We don't have to stick to the thread topic. If you actually wish to discuss atheism, there are several pathetically ernest threads to choose from. Jack, be comforted. There's only one song out of hundreds that talks about Santa spying and making lists. |

Subject: RE: BS: IsMilitantMentalMasturbationReligion? From: GUEST,Blandiver Date: 17 Apr 13 - 09:55 AM (aka Xmas to the athiests) I think it is to many Christians too, in echo of the old Chi-Rho which is used in churches to this day, often highly ornate & decorated with threads o' gold. Xtianity is common shorthand too, but I'm happy with Christianity, and Christmas too for that matter, though I doubt either have much to do with the teachings & example of Jesus Christ as I've come to purposefully misunderstand them o'er the years - but I guess that's down to what you Mudcatters would call The Folk Process. I love the Gospel of Thomas - and my favourite Christmas reading is to be found in the Gospel of Pseudo Matthew (from whence we get the Cherry Tree Carol). Father Christmas is the Siberian Amanita muscaria munching Shamanic Santa; red in tooth & claw as Leeneia points out. Was he ever nailed to a cross though? Or is that just a piece of xenophobic folklore that has wormed its way into our affections by way of another level of mawkish metaphor? Meanings do change though, it's the nature of the beast, but whilst as a child I believed fervently in Santa Clause I was in no way aggrieved when I learned he didn't, in fact, exist. As long as the presents kept coming I simply didn't care, but we always hung out our stockings and left him a glass of port, a slice of Christmas cake and a carrot for his reindeer in the same way I might till toddle along to Midnight Mass (something we never did as a kid though, likewise get up at dawn to watch the Solstice Sunrise). I learned long ago that Mythic Concepts could be fun - like God, Top Cat, UFOs and Folk Music - but didn't actually have any corporeal currency in The Real World. PS : Is Militant Mental Masturbation Religion what exactly? |

There's only one song out of hundreds that talks about Santa spying and making lists. " It wasn't the song Leeneia. It was my mother and aunts who made Santa so spooky. I was only kidding before. But now that I look back on that, it makes me sad. I did not have a happy childhood. I didn't realize that my Santa experience was different from that of other people. I'm talking to Carol now. She DID not experience the horrible stress of TRYING to be EXTRA good right up until the day. And having the intense sense of relief when I saw the presents. Now if I can only get over the craving for a coca cola every time I see person in a Santa suit. |

Subject: RE: BS: IsMilitantMentalMasturbationReligion? From: olddude Date: 17 Apr 13 - 10:48 AM I may have told this before. When my daughter graduated from college we had a little get together. while digging out some old photo's I found a letter she wrote as a small child. "dear toothfairy, I lost a tooth three weeks ago and I never got any money for it. If you don't mind and not busy, I could use the money love kelly" That night I put a letter in her room and five bucks. "Dear kelly, sorry it took me 11 years to get back to you about your lost tooth, I been kinda busy" Love toothfairy |

Pathetically Ernest, oddly enough, was the working title of an otherwise very famous play by Oscar Wilde: A Trivial Comedy for Serious People - a bit like the BS section of Mudcat. |
