Subject: RE: BS: If a Troll Pukes in the Forest... From: GUEST,Musket sans body Date: 15 Apr 13 - 10:58 AM Which makes me nobody. Which makes me respond. I'm not used to Internet chats other than this site. I avoid Facebook etc. So I have little experience of what a troll is. If it means sabotaging discussion for no reason or anarchic reasons, then troll is as good a term as any. However, if it is used when someone disagrees with you or is controversial in order to stimulate debate then troll is a lazy accusation. As to the question, the answer is yes. There are always creatures and organisms that can detect vibration or odour in all but the most sterile environments and forests harbour many creatures, mythical trolls included it seems... Mudcat is well versed in discussing mythical creatures. ... |

Subject: RE: BS: If a Troll Pukes in the Forest... From: Jack the Sailor Date: 15 Apr 13 - 11:13 AM The example of troll that immediately comes to mind is someone who starts a thread calling someone a time traveler because they made typo on a date. "Trolling" for a response is one of the root phrases of the word according to many. I think it depends on motivation. If you say something controversial to stir up a crap storm, and you keep stirring the pot with insults and rude behavior, it is trolling. Politely bring up a serious topic because you want to learn about it and talk civilly it is not. Of course there are more than 50 shades of gray between those two poles. |

Subject: RE: BS: If a Troll Pukes in the Forest... From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 15 Apr 13 - 12:00 PM Jack, do you perhaps mean 'trawling for a response'? (As in 'trawling, or fishing, for compliments') |

Subject: RE: BS: If a Troll Pukes in the Forest... From: Jack the Sailor Date: 15 Apr 13 - 12:43 PM I grew up in a fishing community In Newfoundland on Conception Bay. We used to troll in a small boat on a fresh water pond and use different types of trawls in salt water on larger boats. But I suspect both words are variants of the same root word. troll 1 (trl) v. trolled, troll·ing, trolls v.tr. 1. a. To fish for by trailing a baited line from behind a slowly moving boat. b. To fish in by trailing a baited line: troll the lake for bass. c. To trail (a baited line) in fishing. |

Subject: RE: BS: If a Troll Pukes in the Forest... From: Little Hawk Date: 15 Apr 13 - 12:50 PM The sound of a troll puking in the forest is quite loud. One would be wise not to respond to it, but move off in another direction, because trolls are generally quite unfriendly even when they're feeling well. A troll that is sick to his stomach should be avoided at all costs! |

Subject: RE: BS: If a Troll Pukes in the Forest... From: GUEST,Begabee Date: 15 Apr 13 - 01:06 PM We don't hang around much under bridges. We prefer caves, wooded glens, high rocky areas, places like that. If you happen to come along, we rip off your head and make a good meal of you. I can see the point to hanging around under bridges, because it would be a good way to ambush travellers, but it just isn't the sort of place where a troll really wants to spend a lot of his time. Too damp and cheerless. Besides, if you make a habit of hanging around in the same place all the time, the aggrieved relatives of those whose heads you've ripped off may eventually come around with a well-armed group and put an abrupt end to your career. Not smart. It's better to strike where one is not expected and keep changing locations. |

From: dick greenhaus Date: 15 Apr 13 - 04:02 PM A philosopher once stated, "God Must find it exceedingly odd To note that the tree still continues to be When there's no-one about in the quad.' Dear Sir, I don't find it so odd. I am always about in the quad And that'w why the tree still continues to be As perceived by, yours faithfully, God. |

Subject: RE: BS: If a Troll Pukes in the Forest... From: akenaton Date: 16 Apr 13 - 03:05 AM I don't believe in "trolls".....I'm a Tratheist. It's all just people, some want to debate, some want to have fun, some want to show how brave they are by issuing threats and insults, some are good, some are bad, some are free thinkers, some are bound by ideology.........its all just people. |

Subject: RE: BS: If a Troll Pukes in the Forest... From: JohnInKansas Date: 16 Apr 13 - 05:30 AM Trawling generally means towing a trawl NET. The usage is mostly confined to commercial fishing. Trolling is done with a baited line, or in fresh water sometimes with artificial lures on a line. Trolling is probably the more appropriate term for the internet usage, since the purpose on the net is to "set a hook" in a single victim, although catching more than one at a time is within the context, as some people use multiple hooks/lures on the line. We have had one or two exceptional contributors whose posts might legitimately be called "trawling" due to their tendency to string us along until they "catch us all," as if "casting a broad net" but only those with unusual abilities should try to hard at emulating these performances. (A good punch line is required and those are hard to come up with.) The usage and meanings are somewhat flexible however, since few English/linguistics PhDs work in the fishing industry. (It's less dangerous pushing fries at a burger shop, and some say they meet more friendly people that way.) "Flaming" is another term for the internet activity, and in some cases is considered "advanced trolling" but others distinguish that a true "Flame" must be mainly centered on personal insults. We don't normally observe the distinction here, although both occur when some trolls turn to flames. We also see quite a few senseless(?) threads here that might at first sight appear to be trolling, but in reality are just started by people who are bored but don't have anything much to say, but feel compelled to say it anyway. Occasionally someone else who actually can think of something comes along and turns one of these to a more interesting exchange; but I haven't heard of a descriptive term to describe this practice, possibly because saying more than one has to talk about is a fairly universal human characteristic.
