Subject: BS: ...until justice rolls like water... From: Bobert Date: 08 Apr 13 - 09:18 PM ... and righteousness like a mighty stream... Dr. Martin Luther King from his "I Have a Dream" speech... The man had a way of laying it down like it was... Our nation is poorer every day for not having Dr. King with us leading the way and painting his vision of a compassionate nation... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: ...until justice rolls like water... From: Janie Date: 08 Apr 13 - 09:58 PM Attended an "advanced" ethics training/workshop today, conducted by someone whose work, research and careful thinking I greatly respect. this particular workshop/discussion/consultation focused on ethical dilemmas. One of the dichotomies along which ethical decision-making traverses is that between justice and mercy. Much interesting and thought provoking discussion. |

Subject: RE: BS: ...until justice rolls like water... From: Bobert Date: 08 Apr 13 - 10:15 PM Nah, Rap... We should all want justice... Mercy is for folks who didn't fight the good fight... Too little, too late to be asking for mercy... Mercy is a given and not something to ask for if you fought for justice and lost... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: ...until justice rolls like water... From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 09 Apr 13 - 04:57 AM Dr Martin Luther King was a wholly admirable champion for justice, but the quote is from Amos, Chapter 5 verse 24. Many statesmen have quoted from the Bible. While their choice of Chapter and Verse may be very effective, the words are borrowed. |

Subject: RE: BS: ...until justice rolls like water... From: Bobert Date: 09 Apr 13 - 09:02 AM Word on the street is that Amos has in his possession photographs of God in a compromising position and blackmailed his way into the Bible... (Now you've done it, Boberdz, you blasphemist... It's off to Hell for you, son..) B;~( |

Subject: RE: BS: ...until justice rolls like water... From: Jack the Sailor Date: 09 Apr 13 - 10:55 AM "One of the dichotomies along which ethical decision-making traverses is that between justice and mercy." Am I confused here. I think you an Bobert have good points, I am not sure that they are compatible. Wasn't the "Justice" that Dr. King was speaking of was almost a synonym for the "Mercy" talked about in your class. But in reality this is neither. "We will have justice when all men are judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." It is not merciful to judge people this way. It is not justice to demand it. It is a fundamental change from the way many people thought back then. It is a change that is still being wrought. Though Dr. King's words were beautiful and no doubt perfect for the time. I would rather see such change, such "justice" omnipresent and available to draw upon like the water table than flowing like a river. But maybe that is because I did not grow up on a river and there is no apparent flow to the river where I live now. :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: ...until justice rolls like water... From: frogprince Date: 09 Apr 13 - 11:31 AM I lived in Chicago for quite a few years, tho that's thirty years ago now. Chicago police cars all carried the words "We serve and protect". Not a bad motto as intended, but sometimes I found myself asking "serve and protect whom?". The patrol cars in an adjacent north suburb (Winnetka? Evanston?") were labeled "Justice in a free society". The difference may have been of no consequence in reality, but I liked that latter version. |
