Subject: BS: Gig Bag Question From: Ebbie Date: 30 Mar 13 - 08:09 PM Since the apartment house fire ruined my soft case gig bag, I need a new one. Problem: My Martin is over-sized. It is a 12-fret, slothead D35. I love it and am not getting rid of it. However, it simply does not fit into normal dreadnaught bags or cases. The box is too long as well as too thick. A few years back at our Alaska Folk Festival I bought a gig bag from a man who travels from festival to festival with a ton of CDs, books and supplies. It was $100. and fit fine. So a few weeks ago I emailed him the request to bring gig bags with him when he comes to Juneau next month. Yesterday he responded. He said that the brand that I had bought from him before was no longer available and that he uses a different brand now with slightly different features but similar in size. He said he would sell me one for $97, plus shipping. Then he added: "I could fold them into a luggage bag and that way get them to you by the festival and for less shipping than freight. You will be responsible for my extra luggage bag cost to and from Juneau." What does that mean? I believe he is saying that he will have to bring more luggage because he is packing a gig bag and that I will have to pay for that both incoming and outgoing. I wrote him back asking if he meant that he would not be bringing gig bags this year - so far as I know, he always has. If he is saying that I have to pay for an extra bag, that could be another $50. I am not willing to do that, unless I have no choice. Keep in mind that I have not found a gig bag that fits; while, if it has the same dimensions as the old bag, his will. It also occurs to me that if he is mistaken about the size and it turns out to be too small for my guitar, will I still have to pay for transport? Perhaps I should have posted this above the line- I really do want some comments and suggestions. Thanks much. |

Subject: RE: BS: Gig Bag Question From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 30 Mar 13 - 09:13 PM Do you have a sewing machine? If not, are you on good terms with somebody who knows how to sew? Go to a Joann or Hancock store and get a tent zipper (or similar) and some upholstery fabric. Trace around the dreadnought on some paper to make a pattern then sew your own gig bag. (Such stores carry foam and other shock-absorbing materials too.) It seems to me that guy who sells bags isn't using his head. He could bring the gig bag to Juneau in a cardboard box, sell you the gig bag, throw the cardboard box away and have no 'luggage return cost.' It is not a good sign that he says his present bags are merely similar to the old style. They ought to be identical in size. You might go online and ask Martin Customer Service where you can get a bag for your guitar. They might know who's making such things. |

Subject: RE: BS: Gig Bag Question From: Ebbie Date: 31 Mar 13 - 01:57 AM I tried Musicians Friend, Bobert. They have one that's close to what my guitar needs. However, in a couple of spots their quoted dimension is exactly the dimension my guitar has in that spot. I want a little wiggle room. I have talked with them by phone and after them first assuring me that they have the right one, after I went through the steps one by one they agreed that they don't have it. I've looked at Martin's web site and never found what I need. They have those they note as 'dreadnaught' but a typical dreadnaught is different from mine. But it is a good idea to call their Customer Service and ask them outright. I will try that. I bought the guitar used and the case it came in was totally trashed. It was a hard case and fit perfectly but the hinges were off, the top was broken and the handle was gone. I suspect the first owner too had a replacement problem. |

Subject: RE: BS: Gig Bag Question From: John MacKenzie Date: 31 Mar 13 - 05:16 AM Well there you have hit the same problem as me Ebbie. I want one of those styrene guitar cases, which are nice and light, and pretty strong, to fit my 12 string, and guess what. Yup. Can't be found for love nor money! |

Subject: RE: BS: Gig Bag Question From: Jack the Sailor Date: 31 Mar 13 - 06:52 AM Ebbie, have you tried looking at a gig bag designed for an acoustic bass? not sure of the dimensions, but if you call a manufacturer, you may get what you need for a lot less than 100 dollars. |

Subject: RE: BS: Gig Bag Question From: Ebbie Date: 31 Mar 13 - 05:00 PM Well, I have good news. I hope. I have ordered a JUMBO gig bag. The known dimensions are fine but I'm not sure about the length of the box- my slope shoulder 12 fret extends too high in some bags- and that dimension wasn't available. However. They have a 45-day free return policy (except for shipping)and it should be here within a week. Only thing: The bag will have a FENDER logo on it. lol |

Subject: RE: BS: Gig Bag Question From: Jack the Sailor Date: 31 Mar 13 - 05:06 PM Cool! Best of luck, I hope you don't lose your shipping money. If that doesn't work out, Fender has a nice looking acoustic bass bag. The acoustic basses I have seen have large boxes. Might be a bit loose fitting but the gig bag I use for the Framus is loose fitting. It does the job. |

Subject: RE: BS: Gig Bag Question From: Ebbie Date: 31 Mar 13 - 06:45 PM Yeah- I figure if it is TOO large I can always stuff a towel in it:) This bag has lots of pockets (6) and I like that. It does not have a matching bag/handbag and that's fine. Except when I'm traveling, I don't use those, and I still have one or two left from previous incarnations. (Or maybe I don't- they may have gone with the fire.) As for the Fender logo, if it is too stark maybe I'll stitch a daisy over it or something. Thanks for your hints, guys. Eb |
