Are they labelled as guitarists because they occasionally pick up an instrument and play...

Not necessarily believing in guitar, not quoting Woody Guthrie or Pete Townsend, not worshipping at the altar of Eric Clapton.

And certainly not necessarily following the political views of Dick Gaughan or Martin Simpson.

Or is my lack of wishing to be labelled as a guitarist a form of aggressive atheism?

And is a guitarist who isn't quite sure whether he's a guitarist or not a "strummer"?

I suspect its cos you see 'guitarist' as having certain implications - a bit like disabled people are labelled as scroungers and gay people are treated like perverts.

You need a wider circle of acquaintances -people who don't adopt lazy assumptions and negative stereotypes.

He's just looking for an argument.

Anyone who plays a guitar is a guitarist, no more, no less.

Air guitarists worship false idols. .

So... looking at this thread and the one this thread takes the piss out of..

What is the difference between a guitarist and an atheist?

Just as long as they're not bouzouki players.    You can't get a bouzouki on a plane-- unless you call it a mandolin.

This is more appropriate for a musical debate. There are essentially different guitarists that keep the instrument growing in transition. Guitarists are evolving every day.

What is a guitarist? You know, who cares. If someone plays and communicates well on this instrument, what you call him/her is insignificant.

What is playing well? Now we've opened up a can of worms! This may be in the ear of the beholder.

ie: I don't like the playing of Ted Nugent but I'm not about to say that he isn't some kind of guitarist.

And when Burl Ives plays a simple yet appropriate accompaniment on his guitar, is he not some kind of guitarist?

I get a snob thing going here where people are categorized in their playing depending on who gets to criticize.

There's an indication of some special competence in any such term.

If you describe someone as "a writer" you would normally mean more than just that they have use a pen or a keyboard. 'A cook' would mean more than someone who can heat up a tin of baked beans.

I play the guitar, but I'd hesitate to describe myself as 'a guitarist'. I'd leve that judgement to other people.

Hey Goofus. Someone agrees with one of your posts I notice. If I were you I'd print it out and frame it.

Mind you, he is all at sea so don't get too excited.

The good professor gets excited though, don't you boy?

Woof! Woof! Grrrr Woof!

What's that? Goofus? No, he can't cure you of atheism. He can cure gay people though, and I thought you and I were barking. ...

Guitarists are really guitarists until they put down their guitars and pick up different instruments. Then, if they're like Mark O'Connor or JP Cormier, they become fiddlers/violinists. If they're like me, they become hopeless wannabes who should stick with their guitars.
