Subject: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: Mr Happy Date: 12 Mar 13 - 12:23 PM For some time, there's been a prevalence on many websites to try 2nd guessing with the adverts they stick up that the 'ghost in the machine' thinks might appeal to one. Last couple of weeks while making arrangements for our forthcoming sessions gathering in Anglesey, I've needed to seek out accommodation for non-campers in the form of B&Bs, hotels etc. The daft machine ads keep popping up to tell me about hotels & so on in Anchorage, Alaska or in Bull Bay in the West Indies!! AAAAAAArrrrrgghh! More? |

Subject: RE: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: frogprince Date: 12 Mar 13 - 04:03 PM Did anyone else get whut I got yesterday; I took a look at the gay marriage thread (I know, why did I bother) and got some pictures of men who would like to meet me. Guess they must know something about me that I don't. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: fat B****rd Date: 12 Mar 13 - 04:50 PM I keep getting ads showing well built scantily clad ladies who, apparently, are not far from me ! |

Subject: RE: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: Little Hawk Date: 12 Mar 13 - 04:55 PM Yes, I've been seeing those too. Odd, isn't it? The last one was purportedly only "3 miles away". |

Subject: RE: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: GUEST,999 Date: 12 Mar 13 - 08:54 PM Fucking American ads. This is Canada: we use kilometers, not miles. However, if her tits were quite 'firm, young, juicy and fulfilling', it could have been a picture from Indonesia of a girl named "Hi, my name is Suzie, and I came twice looking at your pics from that dating site." |

Subject: RE: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: Mr Happy Date: 13 Mar 13 - 07:47 AM Today: 'Defeat your funeral costs!' I never click on these silly things, but what could this one's strategy be - 'don't die?' |

Subject: RE: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: GUEST Date: 13 Mar 13 - 06:44 PM Ads are chosen in three ways - in no particular order: 1. your location 2. keywords on the site you are visiting 3. your past search and browsing history If you did a search about Alaska yesterday, you get ads for Alaska today. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: JohnInKansas Date: 13 Mar 13 - 07:06 PM A recent research paper reported that the the analysts had very good success in determining your preferences about things with no apparent relationship to anything you (or your friends) posted on your Farcebook page. (The method and results were not specific to F*book, but that was a major source for data that they used to test their theory.) Assuming their research was valid, it's quite likely that they would be able to know things about you that you yourself never thought of, to predict what ads for things that look strange to you still have a high likelihood of getting a response. Since these researchers only "extended" methods that many people believe are already in use by F*kbook and Google, there is the possibility that telling everyone what ads you receive could encourage others with more overt inclinations to assume (with some credibility) that you're one of them but you just don't know it (... yet ...). (But we won't pry about which ads you've discreetly answered ... .) John |

Subject: RE: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: Mr Happy Date: 14 Mar 13 - 08:00 AM ......but I wasn't searching Alaska I think the Anchorage connection came from the name of a boarding house in Bull Bay, Anglesey, North Wales, UK |

Subject: RE: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: artbrooks Date: 14 Mar 13 - 10:06 AM My internet provider (Earthlink) is apparently located in the Phoenix area, so most of the area-specific ads I see (young ladies, restaurants, monster trucks, etc.) are close to 500 miles away. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 14 Mar 13 - 12:12 PM The thing that creases me up is the way that sites send me ads for something I already bought two weeks ago and have already received, put into use, and left feedback. I just wish there was a reply space into which I could inset a jpeg with the message "Why do you imagine I want to buy this camera today? Here is a picture of the same camera, which I bought from you last F*****g week. Now, leave me the hell alone!! If I want anything, I'll call YOU!" Don T. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ludicrous Automaton 2nd guessing From: Mrrzy Date: 14 Mar 13 - 02:03 PM I thought this was going to be about the phone robots who ask, when you say something, did you say something completely else, please press 1 for Yes, and so on. Those can be a howl if you have time and a nightmare if you're in a hurry! |
