Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Bill D Date: 28 Feb 13 - 09:12 PM I tried to collect Itsy-bitsy, Teeny-weeny, Yellow Polka-dot bikinis once, but got in trouble... So... what are you on about, Bobster? |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Bobert Date: 28 Feb 13 - 09:24 PM Well, Bill, who knows... It's like folks collect stuff... Most of us by the time we've collected about all the furniture that we need turn to smaller stuff... I am just curious what other folks are collecting... No communist plot here... B;~) p.s. Yo Gn-ze bro... I can't read that yeller stuff... |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: maeve Date: 28 Feb 13 - 09:34 PM Bobert- that wasn't gnu, of course. I like smalls- handmade tools, pottery, metalwork, Craftsman Era type things. After most of ours burned up, I switched to (usually) appreciating them without bringing them home. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Bobert Date: 28 Feb 13 - 09:37 PM I like Craftsman stuff, too, maeve... Also into art deco... Have three old cast deco table lamps... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Bill D Date: 28 Feb 13 - 10:12 PM How small is small? I know folks who collect miniatures and make doll-house items (I taught one how to use a lathe to make some)... and I have a few miniature liquor bottles... and I make some VERY small (like an inch or so tall or smaller) wooden lidded jars which get collected. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Rapparee Date: 28 Feb 13 - 10:57 PM I've been trying to collect US currency for years, even small bills, with little success. And we just got rid of a whole BUNCH of #@$%!!ing little Hummels and Aynsely flowers and crap like that. If I'd known you wanted 'em, Bobert, I'd could have given you a good deal -- 1/3 off their original list prices and you pay the shipping. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Charmion Date: 01 Mar 13 - 06:59 AM I like crockery, I must admit. I pretend that it's "useful", but the Wedgwood is as much a trophy as a teapot. Wedgwood ... Mmmmmmm ... |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Rapparee Date: 01 Mar 13 - 08:43 AM We gave some of that away, too. And Waterford. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Charmion Date: 01 Mar 13 - 03:56 PM I gave away a lot of it when I was younger and had inherited a houseful of my parents' stuff, but had noplace to keep it and no inclnation to use it. Now I'm comfortably ensconced in a nice house with space for dinner parties, with a husband who likes dinner parties, it's okay to accumulate a bit of Wedgwood that suits our taste. Waterford crystal is different -- too damned expensive, fussy and uncomfortable in the hand, and fragile. Decent Englsh bone china goes into the dishwasher without grumbling; Waterford stems not so much. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 01 Mar 13 - 06:42 PM I don't collect smalls, but I sell 'em. I make and sell pottery for a living, and about 20% of my sales are of miniatures. They're sort of a sideline, intended to appeal to folks who like little stuff, whether they're big fans of pottery or not. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Rapparee Date: 01 Mar 13 - 07:38 PM Yeah, Bee-Dub, I understand that, but I'll bet you don't make things like this figurine of Bobert. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 01 Mar 13 - 11:15 PM I also have family artifacts/collectibles/antiques that are in use here at the house. I've gradually sold off the odd-ball items that were interesting but didn't need to be here. I have a few charismatic antiques - a lovely tall case clock from about 1815-1830, the family piano (bought new in 1885), and some furniture like bedroom sets and attractive tables and chairs around the house. My dining room table and chairs. All in use. The small stuff - china, glass, etc., some is used, some is displayed, some has been sold. My great grandmother bought a set of semi-vitreous china, but semi-vitreous (think the tiles on the subway walls) wasn't such a great design idea. The crazing results in cracks that absorb moisture. There are people who collect this variety and I've managed to unload about half of a very large set. I'll sell the rest piecemeal. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Gurney Date: 02 Mar 13 - 04:59 PM It seems that our US members don't know that 'smalls' is outdated Brit slang for underwear, particularly of sexy female variety. Just explaining BillD's comment at the top there. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Gurney Date: 02 Mar 13 - 05:02 PM Should have added; depends where you collect them from. You can get a reputation for collecting them from clothes-lines. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Smalls' (Collectables)... From: Ed T Date: 02 Mar 13 - 05:15 PM I don't smoke. But, have a small collection of butane cigarette lighters (and some old lighter fluid types)that look nice and some do odd things when you open them up. a few have flashing neon type lights, one has a girl and guy that kiss when opened, one makes a loud cricket sound, one is a calculator, one is shaped like a dolphin, one gives you a small shock A few are very thin and a few odd shapes and there are other odd ones and old ones. I like them all. |
