This year we are planning to visit Ireland for the first ever time. What we are thinking of is spending 2 or 3 days in Dublin, then on to a nice part of the coast - reachable by train or bus staying in a self catering cottage - also at a location will will allow for 2 or 3 day trips (by bus or train). Then one more night in Dublin before returning home.

Any suggestions? We do not have a big budget so we are looking for cheap and cheerful, It is just the two of us so we would look for a double b&b in Dublin, and a one bedroom cottage on the coast.

Nearby folk music would be a bonus!

We are looking at the second half of September.

I wish I could help! I have a friend who does this sort of trip to Ireland each year, but she's not on Mudcat. Most years she goes to a different part of Ireland. I think she looks at self-catering cottages online, and I don't think she has ever been disappointed. She even rents a car and of course drives on the "other" side of the road. It would be nice if someone here who has done that could recommend some reliable websites.

On this occasion we are looking at public transport to get about, Galway is a front runner at the moment as it has affordable apartments in the city. But still open to suggestions.

Another year I would think of taking a car over on the ferry, but I wouldn't trust my current car - it has had tow serious problems since I bought it. In fact I wouldn#t trust it any further than I can push it back home!
