Subject: RE: Sharon Shannon on Woman's Hour BBCR4 From: Manitas_at_home Date: 23 Feb 13 - 03:28 AM She knows exactly what she plays, being at the top of her field. It's all a matter of nomenclature. A melodeon is a name used in England and Scotland for a type of accordion (or accordeon) that has buttons and sounds different notes on the pull and push but in Ireland the same name denotes a one-row button accordion and a 2-row is usually just an accordeon. On the continent the melodeon is usually called a diatonic accordion. I would use the term squeeze-box to include the various types of concertinas with the various types of accordions. |

Subject: RE: Sharon Shannon on Woman's Hour BBCR4 From: Tattie Bogle Date: 23 Feb 13 - 09:29 PM There is a massively long thread somewhere on this site re the nomenclature issue, but as Manitas says, in Ireland, the more common name is a button accordion ( or accordeon) for what is known in England as a melodeon. I have a B/C two row button accordion which looks identical to the same manufacturer's G/D melodeon. If asked. I tell folk my instrument is a button accordion, but it doesn't really worry me what people call it unless they call it a concertina! |
