Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Good Time Charlie (Andy Roberts version) From: wordfella Date: 17 Feb 13 - 08:48 AM I haven't heard this, but a forty-five bream (big fish?) doesn't make sense. ".38 Special on a .45 frame" is a lyric from "Railroad Bill." I'll bet that's it. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Good Time Charlie (Andy Roberts version) From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 17 Feb 13 - 11:12 AM Just a few minor corrections compared to the youtube version:Andy Roberts - Goo Time Charlie (from 1971, Nina and the Dream Tree): v2 l1: Get a thirty-eight.... v3 l4: 'Cause Good time Charlie's... v4 l1: Yeah, hey mama... v4 l2: Not thing in the world's gonna... v7 l1 Don't care... v8 l1 Yes I love... And while Spider John has ... dance like Snakey Dave Ray, Robert's version sounds like ...dance like Stake-o-Ray Mick |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Good Time Charlie (Andy Roberts version) From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Mar 13 - 10:28 PM Spider John's partner Dave Ray was known as "Snaker," so I think he's saying "Snaker Ray." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Good Time Charlie (Andy Roberts version) From: PHJim Date: 10 Dec 14 - 10:15 PM This is how I remember it from the Blues, Rags & Hollers album from Koerner, Ray & Glover in the sixties. At this time, Spider John played a seven string guitar with a double course G string with an octave G added. He modified a six string guitar by putting a banjo tuning peg in the headstock and using a tailpiece and a floating bridge. I'm going to get me a gun as long as my arm Shoot every man ever done me harm Good time Charlie's back in town again I got a thirty-eight special on a forty-five frame How can I miss when I got good aim Good time Charlie's back in town again Going downtown to get me bottle of booze I don't care what I do Good time Charlie's back in town again Hey, Mama woncha look at me now Ain't a thing in the world's gonna get me down Good time Charlie's back in town again Don't try to dance like Snaker Ray Last time I tried I got thirty days Good time Charlie's back in town again Well, I spent my money and I lost my honey If I can't get happy I'm a-gonna get funny Good time Charlie's back in town again |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Good Time Charlie (Andy Roberts version) From: PHJim Date: 10 Dec 14 - 10:21 PM Just listened to Andy Roberts version. He speeds it up at the end and steals a verse from a version of Salty Dog: I love you in blue and I love you in red, But most of all I love you in blue, Good time Charlie's back in town again. |

Subject: Lyr Add: GOOD TIME CHARLIE (Spider John Koerner) From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Dec 14 - 05:18 PM GOOD TIME CHARLIE As recorded by Spider John Koerner on "What's Left of Spider John" (2013) SPOKEN INTRO: This is called "Good-Time Charlie." This is one of the first songs I made up in my life. And the first two verses were taken—stolen, shall we say—from another folk song, might've been "Railroad Bill." But anyway, the rest of it I made up myself, and it was a long time ago. 1. I'm-a get me a gun as long as my arm, Shoot ever' man ever done me harm. Good-Time Charlie's back in town again. 2. I got a thirty-eight special on a forty-five frame. How 'n the world can I miss if I got dead aim? Good-Time Charlie's back in town again. 3. I spend my money and I lost my honey. If I can't be happy, I'm gonna get funny. Good-Time Charlie's back in town again. 4. I'm goin' downtown to get a bottle of booze. Hey, I don't care what I do. Good-Time Charlie's back in town again. 5. Hey, darlin', look at me now. Ain't a thing in the world's gonna get me down. Good-Time Charlie's back in town again. 6. Don't you try to dance like Snaky Dave Ray. The last woman tried got thirty days. Good-Time Charlie's back in town again. 7. I'm smokin' and drinkin' late at night. I wish I knew wrong from right. Good-Time Charlie's back in town again. 8. Hey, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday again. Whoa, man, it's good-time Charlie! Koerner also sings this song on "Legends of Folk"—a concert album he made with Ramblin' Jack Elliott and U. Utah Phillips in 1995. Lyrics in that recording are nearly identical to those above. Yeah, I know Dave Ray was called "Snaker" but in this song, Koerner sings "Snaky" in both recordings. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Good Time Charlie (Andy Roberts version) From: PHJim Date: 13 Dec 14 - 05:20 PM But on the Blues, Rags & Hollers album he sang, "Don't try to dance like Snaker Ray, Last time I tried I got thirty days." I'm pretty sure that this was the first time he recorded it. |
