Subject: BS: 62 Year Old Bird Gives Birth... From: Bobert Date: 05 Feb 13 - 07:55 PM Okay, first of all, I had nothing to do with this... I did not have sex with that bird... I swear I didn't... But... ... seems that a 62 year old albatross, named Wisom, has hatched out a baby and mother and baby are doing well... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: 62 Year Old Bird Gives Birth... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 06 Feb 13 - 01:32 PM Not to besmirch Wisdom's accomplishment, but Reuters' characterizing her as "the oldest known free-flying bird in the United States" is a bit of a stretch. The bird's home is Midway Island, which is a US possession/protectorate, but definitely not part of the US itself. Do you think Reuters might also characterize a Falkland Islands penguin as being "the oldest known penguin in the United Kingdom"? |

Subject: RE: BS: 62 Year Old Bird Gives Birth... From: JohnInKansas Date: 07 Feb 13 - 04:13 PM The article at the link does make it clear that the bird's breeding/mating ground is in Hawaii where it was tagged by US Fish and Wildlife people, and it migrates between there and the coastal waters of Alaska. While calling it just "a US bird" without explanation is perhaps a little sloppy, anything else would be like revoking the citizenship of anyone who flew across an ocean or gave birth in a foreign country (which some here might think isn't all that bad an idea, of course). Subject: RE: BS: 62 Year Old Bird Gives Birth... From: JohnInKansas Date: 07 Feb 13 - 09:24 PM A recent research note claimed that a majority of women who postponed having a first child until later in life (over 40?) were surprised!! to learn that their ability to conceive wasn't what it once was. Maybe nobody told this ol' bird she was supposed to slow down (?). Although these birds generally mate for life, it's also possible she was "widowed" and "went couger" with a much younger replacement cohort who's too frisky to be restrained. John |
