The local wood pigeons have, over the last couple of days, discovered the brassicas aand other cruciferae in my garden. (I wondered why the watercress wasn't regenerating after picking.) I have covered things with plastic trellis cut into cloche form, but they can walk under the ends. (And don't they trample things down.) I don't think the weather's suitable to put my cardboard hawk out. (I have a town house, and run a string down from a room on the top floor down to the 6ft fence at the back.) The garden is enclosed by fence on three sides.
They fly off when I open the window and clap, but I can't be doing that all the time.
Any suggestions?
Penny

Forgot to mention that I don't want to affect the bue, great and long-tailed tits, the robins, the wren or even the starlings who occasionally denude the bird feeders.

They are a pest those big fat woodpigeons. We put 4ft canes around the plots (two long and narrow strips) then attach small-gauge plastic netting to the canes. The pidgies are a bit wary of flying up and over these 4ft net walls. We also put out grain and bread etc in another part of the garden, and they seem happy with that. Our starlings hoover up the fat slabs hanging up for the small birds. But considering the awful winter we've had, they must all be near death with starvation. I'm trying to do all I can to help them. We've even had huge seagulls landing in our little garden, carrying off a whole slice of bread at a time. All the wildlife has taken a battering this year. So have we, our oil bill has been astronomical!

I don't think I can do a barrier - there's the six foot fences anyway, and they don't seem to stop them dropping in - one managed to hit my living room window sometime this morning - no sign of a corpse, though. Thae garden is quite small, only about the footprint of a house, so there really isn't anywhere else to put pigeon food. They come in and get at the feeder stuff. Since I read that starlings are now endangered, I'm not so anti them hoovering up the nuts and so on.

Had a flock of long tailed tits at the suet over the last three days, coming in a lurking in the forsythia and the neighbour's buddleia and dashing across to the feeder. Looks like about ten of them.

Do you think foil strips on canes might work?

We handle bird problems by constructing a series of simple arches from thin flexible PVC pipe and covering them with poultry wire.

How does one drive away one species of bird without disrupting the habits of others?

We handle pigeon problems with a pellet rifle .22 preferred over .177. Very quiet & effective. And the pigeons if prepared correctly are quite tasty.

Unfortunately, I'm well surrounded by other homes, so shooting is out of the question.
Perhaps a net shot out with a catapult from upstairs?
I really want to deter rather than have pigeon pie.

If starlings are endangered there, there are some here in the States we'd be happy to send back to Blighty. They're a bloody damned nuisance.

Flaming?

No.

Smoked pigeon breast as a starter with a simple salad tossed in just oil and a hint of balsamic.

I was brought up around pigeon fanciers. Had to muck out my neighbours pigeon loft for pocket money or sit clocking them in.

Oh Rap, starlings are lovely, so comical and always so very hungry.
