From: Mr Happy Date: 01 Feb 13 - 09:00 AM Ayup, another prediction which may put the kybosh on our plans for folking about during summer, an asteroid may hit Gaia on Friday 15th February & wipe out life as we know it. http://theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com/2012/03/04/earth-will-likely-be-impacted-by-large-asteroid-february-15-16-2013/ |

Subject: RE: World may end Feb 15th 2013! From: Stilly River Sage Date: 01 Feb 13 - 09:36 AM That site is lunatic fringe, Mr. Happy. The Feb. 1 entry shows women in India, sweeping next to a pile of ice (see all of the straight edges and corners - probably out of someone's freezer or cooler) and suggests India was hit with giant hailstones. You're not that gullible, are you? Take the keywords and inflate a story around them - this isn't doing anyone a service. They're just trying to get the National Enquirer to pick up their story. The asteroid story is old - there was something on the news last week that no asteroids or comets are coming near the planet any time soon after all. SRS |

Subject: RE: World may end Feb 15th 2013! From: Rapparee Date: 01 Feb 13 - 09:43 AM That's a government cover-up, Stilly, so the plebs won't panic. In fact, everything this a government cover-up. Nothing you think happened since Christmas Day, 800 CE actually happened. That's when Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor and the Holy Roman Empire started. The HRE actually runs things now and has for a very long time. The Holy Roman Emperor won't permit an asteroid to hit the Earth as it would mess up his plans for my birthday party. Besides, the world ended in October, 1842. |

My S.O. has already got me a lovely card, 'cos I saw it hidden in the drawer while putting away his clean underwear! These folk are totally bonkers, I'm quite tired of being told we'll soon be raptured or ruptured or blown to bits. Seriously, what annoys me is that vulnerable or 'simple' folk may get scared and panicky about it. It was 'Ban The Bomb' decades ago, we were all going up in an atomic cloud. Then those daft public awareness films about what to do when nuclear war broke out. Now it's the Weather Warnings, "You may have 2 millimetres of snow so take precautions and be prepared". They'd have us living in a trembling state of fear if they could. Why don't they all bugger off? |

From: JohnInKansas Date: 02 Feb 13 - 01:27 PM Eliza - My S.O. has already got me a lovely card, 'cos I saw it hidden in the drawer while putting away his clean underwear! That's probably the card he got a couple of years ago and then forgot to give to you when the time came. A prior near-disaster may have encouraged him to stock up on "emergency supplies" to be "prepared" for the next one, and he's probably got a whole stash of them somewhere else where he keeps his "secret stuff" or maybe scattered about in several places to be handy when needed. When he gives you one that's kind of old and crumbly, he'll probably say he got it at a used book store, 'cause "it seemed special and made me think of you." It's a kindness to pretend you believe whatever story he comes up with. John |

Subject: RE: World may end Feb 15th 2013! From: JohnInKansas Date: 02 Feb 13 - 05:13 PM There is actually an asteroid that will make a close pass by earth on February 15, but it poses no hazard to any of us. Asteroid to give Earth record-setting shave. The asteroid will pass within the orbital radius of our geosynchronous satellites (i.e. will pass between the earth and the orbits of those satellites) but will not strike the earth. (Even the possibility that it might strike one of our artificial satellites, or disrupt the orbit of one, is "extremely remote." It probably won't get close enough to sweep up any of the space junk.) Should this particular "large" asteroid actually strike the earth on some future pass (a few thousand years from now?), it is about the same size as the "Tunguska Event" object that levelled trees over about 700 square miles in Siberia in 1908, which was hardly the "end of the world." (700 square miles damaged / 50,260,000 square miles of earth only gets 0.0013% of the surface and shouldn't kick up a lot of dust, even if lands in some place as dry as Texas has been this year.) By the time this one gets close enough to be seen by better amateur telescopes, it will be moving so fast (~1 degree per minute) that even very good amateur equipment won't be able to track it closely enough to do much looking at it or to record anything but a blur in a photograph. [1 degree is about twice the width of the full moon.] A few truly dedicated astrononuts (with lots of money) likely will post pictures, but we can also just wait for the book. A somewhat more general discussion of "things that might get us" is at Asteroids vs Comets, and there is enough there to worry about for those who really want to - but I think I'll have another cup'a before I settle down to study and wring hands over it all. "Let's do it quick, before we all die" never worked for me anyway. John |

Subject: RE: World may end Feb 15th 2013! From: Donuel Date: 02 Feb 13 - 08:42 PM As far as astroid collisions go, the one in 2030 does have some moderate concern among astronomers. There are lots of tugs and pulls that it will be exposed to in the meantime. The closest miss we had recently was a third of the distance to the moon. I wonder if people who said "who cares" made a whimsical rhetorical question , or a personal statement. I wonder if Aliens noticed a change on Earth on Fridays. I wonder if they too look forward to weekends. I wonder when the future does effect the past by rare circumstances, if anyone notices or could be capable of noticing. I wonder if the linear minds on Earth will legislate that complete human beings with well developed right brains will be deemed handicapped or deranged. Strike that, they already have. I wonder when the vegetarian tiger went extinct. I wonder if people would pay to see the color they do not see. I wonder if an Extasy oxytocin pill enhanced fear moratorium would let people trust each other if only for a day. I wonder if a mega sky hologram of God with LTA ships super acousticly (auditory brain wave broadcast) denouncing the republican base across the nation, they would listen. I wonder about the next secret Koch Bros commerical posing as a grass roots democratic party affiliate, spewing right wing gun love, and exactly who it will discredit. I wonder about elastic stitchs inside the upper cheek to just below the eyes making an older person look 20 years younger for only $99 instead of the barbaric plastic surgury metnods that cost $10K. I wonder if the "who cares" people meant that without consciousness no one would care and in fact would be incapable of caring, on 2 16 13. I wonder if Wonder bread is gone for good. |

Subject: RE: World may end Feb 15th 2013! From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Feb 13 - 07:44 PM "Melancholia" wasn't about a mere asteroid hitting the Earth. It was about an enormous blue planet (and a very attractive one) colliding with the Earth and swallowing it up the way a very large fish might swallow a small goldfish. That's a considerably bigger problem than an asteroid collision. I'd say that "Melancholia" was about the size of Jupiter...or perhaps Saturn. There'd be nothing left for Earthlings to complain about after that event. |
|
Subject: RE: World may end Feb 15th 2013! From: GUEST,Stim Date: 04 Feb 13 - 01:53 PM Actually, Little Hawk, "Melancholia" was an allegory about dealing with and accepting depression. The "blue planet" thing was the central conceit, and it was huge and overpowering because real melancholia is... Hollywood has been definitely thinking about celestial objects and their consequences lately. Have you seen the other recent "planetary" movies? "Another Earth", about a planet that is a mirror to Earth that appears in the heavens. There is also, "Upside Down" about two inhabited planets that are so close that you can climb from one to the other, but when you do, you are still subject to the gravity of your home planet. And there is"The Tree of Life", no one has been able to figure out what it's about, but it has lots of huge planets moving around all through it. |
|
Subject: RE: World may end Feb 15th 2013! From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Feb 13 - 03:36 PM Yes, Stim, I can see how "Melancholia" worked on the level of an allegory about depression, as you say. There are (in my opinion) some actual solutions for depression, though, other than just accepting it (although those solutions may not at all be apparent to the one who is experiencing the depression). There's another recent movie about celestial objects and their consequences..."Seeking a Friend at the End of the World". I liked that one, and I liked "Melancholia" too. |
