Subject: RE: Cole Younger From: GUEST,999 Date: 19 Jan 13 - 11:08 AM Roberto, I think you would get your question answered by Vic Smith. Why don't you message him via Mudcat? |

Subject: RE: Cole Younger From: GUEST Date: 19 Jan 13 - 05:05 PM This I don't know. But Mudcat's own Deb Cowan does a nice a capella version, and there's a wonderful recording by Mary McCaslin. Dan |

Subject: RE: Cole Younger From: Jim Carroll Date: 20 Jan 13 - 06:31 AM Roberto: Bandit Cole Younger is attributed to Edward L Crane 'The Texas Cowboy' on the Harry Smith Anthology (issued by Colombia early 1930). Don't know if it's the same one without comparing Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: Cole Younger From: DebC Date: 20 Jan 13 - 02:38 PM The version I sing is a version that appears in Lomax, Max Hunter and I have also seen it in the Flanders Ballad collection. Thanks for the info Jim C. I had forgotten that it was on the Smith anthology. Deb |

Subject: RE: Cole Younger From: GUEST,Lighter Date: 20 Jan 13 - 02:48 PM In "Folk Songs of North America," Alan Lomax suggests that Crane learned the words from John Lomax's "Cowboy Songs" (1910) and then "set his own tune." I haven't compared Crane's and Lomax's texts in many years and can't say how similar they are. |

Subject: RE: Cole Younger From: Roberto Date: 22 Jan 13 - 08:31 AM No, it is not Crane. I've read Ed McCurdy recorded the ballad, and I'm pretty sure it is him singing. |
