Subject: BS: Old film b&w film clips for your delight From: Will Fly Date: 16 Jan 13 - 04:09 PM I'm very fond of old films - and particularly those shot in black and white. For fun, I've put together a selection of stills from some of the films in my collection up on the web. They illustrate, for me, some of the artistic genius of the cinematographers of the day. YONDER Clicking on a thumbnail reveals the full clip and a caption. You might want to guess the film title. No titles or actors' names are shown on the pages - but it's not a quiz - the film titles are in the page URLs! More to come in the next day or three... |

Subject: RE: BS: Old film b&w film clips for your delight From: Will Fly Date: 17 Jan 13 - 04:12 AM I meant to watch The Artist when it was released - and missed it. Might have to get it on video. The Pathé site is a great site - I've used it many times. But I do think they seriously overprice their stuff. For example, a 6 minute film of the Morecambe Carnival in 1926 costs £50! Now I don't know whether you get a film copy of the original celluloid for that, or a DVD or what, but who other than commercial film & TV companies can afford that? I recall going to a film series at the National Film Theatre in London (many years ago) called "The Golden Silents". It was hosted by comedian Michael Bentine, and each showing featured a particular person or theme. It was obvious that the quality of those b&w films, when an unspoiled print was shown, was stupendous and of stunning clarity and beauty. Much of today's output is all CGI and computers - fine in its own way but less in cinematographic artistry. |
