Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: Richard Bridge Date: 15 Jan 13 - 06:41 PM It's lost the brutality of the 60s ones and the first Mako Sharks. The Iso Grofo A3C was prettier - see here although the underbumper spots on the particular car there are ghastly and were not standard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBfzv-oyYvQ |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Jan 13 - 06:48 PM Vettes were my rides. I was single and making decent money and spent it faster. 4 were street drivers and 2 were garage queens but they all were between 68 and 74. One garage queen was my favorite, a bright yellow 71 LT1 that I did major work on and just took it out for the occasional proficiency run and autocross/hillclimb events if they fit in with the other racing schedule. In any case, Corvette has managed to maintain a fair bit of "lineage" over the years and have certainly become much more sophisticated. I drove a 2004 a few years ago and it was still a kick but the increased smoothness has taken away the old ground pounding feel which the cars gave you. Such is life. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: Bobert Date: 15 Jan 13 - 07:01 PM Spawz, I am familiar with the early small block 350/300s that were the workhorse of the 60s Vettes but not all that familiar with the first generation LT1s... I do know they got a lot more hp out of it but that's about it... So what did they do to get the added hp??? B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: Jack the Sailor Date: 15 Jan 13 - 07:15 PM mmmmm quad pipes mmmmmmm |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: Bobert Date: 15 Jan 13 - 07:28 PM I guess you mean "tuned headers", JtS, I donno... Tuned exhausts are fine but by themselves don't give you that much hp... I mean, the internal combustion engine is an "air pump" and getting more out of one involves more than just one component... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Jan 13 - 07:44 PM Solid lifter cam with more radical cam timing;different head, a slightly modified 202 angle plug head with better valves; higher compression/pistons;4 bolt main block;upgrade higher pressure oil pump. I also added 1 & 7/8" headers thru side pipes(smaller=better low end torque and replaced the stock mani/carb set-up with Weiand manifold topped with an AFB 800. The basic small block had been around so long it was about bullet proof and would take a lot of abuse. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: Bobert Date: 15 Jan 13 - 07:51 PM Yup... I had a 70 Chevy, 1 ton car hauler (ramp truck) with a 350 in it... Toughest engine that Chevy ever built... Good power and good torque... BTW, Spawz... If I am not mistaken the early LT1's ran Holley carbs??? Yes, no??? B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Jan 13 - 09:05 PM Yes they did and you'll notice I swapped for the AFB....LOL.....Also, the Weiand was a really excellent manifold often overshadowed by the Edelbrocks. I used the Hedman Headers simply because they were the only ones with the peashooter tubes. I needed low end torque a lot more than high end HP. We also welded and gussetted the frame, went with nylon bushings in the A-Arms and rear suspension, a 1 inch, Adco swaybar front and a 7/8" rear bar. It had the F41 Spring pack already. Then, since this wasn't an everyday car and just used for fun, I set-up the front end with 3degrees positive caster and 2 degrees negative camber keeping the contact patch flatter. In the rear I adjusted the toe-in to a sixteenth toe out. What this did was cut braking time.....a neat trick. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: Bobert Date: 15 Jan 13 - 09:22 PM Eat rear tires but, hey??? I had the same situation with building thr engine for my Ghia mini-stocker... Short tracks and low end torque go hand in hand... Revs are nice but not in that situation... What we did was go with big bump/low duration cams... Did the trick just fine... You wouldn't have believed caster/camber shit we pulled on those poor old VWs... Everything de-cambered all to hell and back... And then chained down... These cars were barbaric... I can't believe I did this to a perfectly good Karmann Ghia... Oh well... Shit happens... BTW, AFBs... I thought that just meant "Aluminum Four Barrel" but not sure what brand of carb that was??? B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Jan 13 - 09:33 PM Actually it didn't and the fronts really got far worse. See, on a drive axle with IRS when you accelerate the tires actually come straight and when you back off the gas with the toe-out they go to the sides with the front and scrub a bit of speed of for you. Couple of other notes on that car.......I went with a Borg and Beck clutch which was much better with the M22 rock crusher from the factory. Fantastic tranny. Also swapped for Ansen slotted aluminum wheels (lightest available at the time) with BFG Comp TA's until the Phoenix Stahlflex was availble in that size. It was the hot Solo/Hillclimb tire of the day. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: JohnInKansas Date: 17 Jan 13 - 07:40 PM GM's CEO is auctioning off 1958 Corvette to help Habitat for Humanity The Detroit Bureau GM CEO Dan Akerson will auction off his 1958 Corvette to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau 17 January 2013 Want to buy a Corvette? No, not the new C7 Chevrolet Corvette that made its splashy debut at the North American International Auto Show this past week. The one going on the auction block at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Friday has a bit more miles on the odometer, though it appears the relatively rare '58 'Vette is in excellent condition. It also happens to be the personal car of Dan Akerson, CEO of Chevy's parent, General Motors. The sale will be used to raise money for Habitat for Humanity, according to the maker, the proceeds specifically earmarked for the restoration of the Morningside Commons neighborhood not far from GM's headquarters along the Detroit River. Akerson has reportedly already given Habitat about $1 million of his own money during the past year. If you're really desperate to get one of the new 2014 Corvettes, however, you can bid on the first of the seventh-generation models, the so-called C7, a day later, also at the Barrett-Jackson Auction. And like Akerson's first-generation two-seater, proceeds will also be donated, in this case to Detroit's College for Creative Studies. "I love the car," Akerson, a Naval Academy graduate who joined GM, initially as a board member, following its 2009 bankruptcy. But he says it could be "better purposed" auctioning it off for charity. Akerson's Corvette is a first-generation model that, GM notes, "featured a 245-horsepower V-8 and included new body and instrument panels and new upholstery. External highlights included dual headlamps – a Corvette first – and twin chrome trunk spears. Chevrolet built 9,168 Corvettes for the 1958 model year, but only 510, or just over 5 percent, were painted Regal Turquoise. Akerson's Corvette is a hardtop convertible and is considered scarce among remaining 1958 models." John |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: Bobert Date: 17 Jan 13 - 08:04 PM Engine swaps can be tricky with over-heating... Most of the time it all comes down to the size of the radiator, the number of blades on the fan and the most overlooked problem: the fan shroud... Lotta folks never think about what a fan shroud does but if the fan ain't inside it or it is missing then bad things can happen... I was looking at the a newish Camaro today and thinking that the Vette rear is about the same beast except the Vette has 4 tailpipes... I don't know if they split the exhaust manifolds and run dual duals 'er what??? I doubt it but, hey??? BTW, I was workin' in the service department for Dominion Chevrolet in Richmond in '81 when GM changed the body style of the Camaro and they kinda snuck one into the dealership all covered up and about 20 of us all crammed into the wash bay behind the body shop and checked it out... I thought it was cool... I mean, for an old Ford guy, that is... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: JohnInKansas Date: 30 Jan 13 - 03:25 PM Carjackers, unable to drive stick shift, fail to steal Corvette By Isolde Raftery, Staff Writer, NBC News Randolph Bean of Oviedo, Fla., had pulled over late Sunday night to text message his wife when two would-be carjackers approached his sporty yellow Corvette. One, holding a gun, forced him to the ground while the other hopped in the driver's seat, Bean, 51, told WKMG Local 6. But there was a problem: The aspiring carjacker didn't know how to start Bean's car, a 2002 Millennium Yellow Z06 Corvette. (The car, used, sells for about $19,000.) "The guy started screaming at me, 'How do I start the car?'" Bean told WKMG. Finally, the other guy, still holding Bean at gunpoint, hollered back, "It's a stick!" "I had to tell him four different times that you have to push in the clutch because it's a standard transmission," Bean told myfoxorlando.com. The two assailants – Bean said they were handsome young men -- ultimately ran away with his phone, wallet and keys. The wallet, he said, was special because his wife made it. "My first thought was I guess we don't have driver's ed in school anymore because no one knows how to drive a stick," he told myfoxorlando.com. "And my second thing was, 'Don't shoot me because you can't start the car! I am trying to help you out here.'" [Is his new motto "stick it to 'em!" ...?] John |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: JohnInKansas Date: 30 Jan 13 - 10:20 PM A couple of states used to put a restriction of "automatic transmission only" on your drivers license, unless you took the test in a stick shift, and still may. You had to provide the car for the test. This restriction might not be too unreasonable, but I was always amazed at the blind courage of the test examiners who went along for the ride in the car you brought with you (that you may have borrowed just for the test and even you aren't familiar with). For quite a while (ca. early 70s) there weren't any (US brands) stick shifts approved for California emissions, because they were running them all so lean that lugging the engine would destroy it, so the factories didn't try to certify them. (You can't pull the revs down too far (as easily) with an automatic.) I've met quite a few who can't remember ever driving a stick, but always thought it was something you should know how to do. (I was sort of trained in a stick shift truck with no working clutch so I got a lot of practice.) John |

Subject: RE: BS: 2014 Corvette Stingray...Coooool! From: ChanteyLass Date: 31 Jan 13 - 07:41 PM I think I wrote part of my history with standard and automatic transmissions on another thread. I learned on my parents' automatic but as soon as I got my license they taught me how to drive their stick. I could do it and even drove it to work (high school and college summer jobs) but I was more comfortable with the automatic, so I bought one for my first car. When I got married, I relearned to drive my then-husband's standard pick-up truck and, later, his Datsun 240Z. I was much more comfortable but still avoided steep hills with traffic lights at the top! My next several cars were standards. But two weeks ago, at 64, I bought a Prius with an automatic. I've heard that because so few people drive standards now, they are devalued at trade-in, I feel that my reflexes are a little slower, and I'm not sure that the way I drove a stick was ever good enough to save fuel! I am amazed at how quickly I readjusted to the automatic. I haven't fumbled for the clutch and rarely reach toward the gearshift when I come to a stop. In the past when I've had loaner cars I often went for the clutch and gearshift. Remember when cars had manual chokes? |
