Hi,

A BBC Arena documentary was made c1980 about The Albion Band, and although clips exist on youtube, I would like to locate it in an archive but do not have the full title. If anyone knows it - please can you reply?? Many thanks.

It was simply called "The Albion Band" and was produced by BBC Bristol and the Bristol Arts Unit in 1980. I have a roughish copy on DVD if you are interested.

Willa has linked to an audio. Eliza is after a video - approx 1 hour I recall - which includes some excellent footage recorded at Reading Hexagon Theatre - also relying on a bad memory.

I don't think she'll find it anywhere and will have to rely on kind peope like Roly.

No doubt Bonzo3legs will be able to supply more info when he next looks at the 'Cat. I don't think that the BBC have an archive copy either - how shortsighted.

Hello all - thank you so very much.
Indeed - I contacted the BBC in the hope they would be able to help but they were not even prepared to look, let alone consider allowing me to view it!
RolyH - if there is any way that I could borrow your copy I would be eternally grateful. Can I email you??

Many thanks

I saw it in the National Sound Archive index when I last visited around 1991.......ah but that was 22 years ago!! You could give it a try.

On the Albion Band uploads on YouTube post an appeal for a complete recording - someone might have one. Also put out a request on the Dimeadozen forum and mailing list.

As an aside for decades the Copper Family have been after an Arena prog. from the early 1980s filmed in the Central Club at Peacehaven. No joy with the Beeb.

How much more of the documentary is there? It seems weird that the YouTube title includes the word "full" when there are no intro or ending titles to prove that we're seeing all of it. IF what Nick said about it being about an hour long, I guess that upload is missing about 15 mins of it.

The Bonnie Labouring Boy is missing sung by Martin Carthy and Shirley Collins towards the end.

My copy is 44:43 and does have credits which continue after the end of the one listed above. My 'hour' as mentioned almost 10 years ago was from memory and even then that wasn't exactly reliable!

Here’s the Genome link to an Albion Band doco. on the Beeb.

Is this the programme uploaded to YT?

However it’s not an Arena programme.

Nick's 44 minute version does appear to be the full version as per Radio Times! I also remember one or two master tape traders in the 1980s referring to programme length of an hour.

Given that life is a bit of an uphill battle anyway, it is not easy to answer a cry for help from another human being, especially during a war. But people who care still go on trying and this time it is B.J.'s turn.

It's there, just over 30 mins into the youtube video.

Yes, as the genome describes. I have it on excellent authority that much searching was done at the BBC - and probably still is - but no trace of a master found. I live in hope.

(Aha, logged in at last!!)

Yes, it's a morris tune. There's experts on Mudcat but to me it sounds like "Maid of the Mill" (although happy to be wrong.

That's right, it is used for William and Nancy, and Ashley used it for a barn dance too.

There are a few different uploads to YT of the same film then? Please could folks add a list of links here (even clickies). Thanks.

On the 1979 “Full Hour” version there’s a nice clip of Dartmoor step dancing right at the start. Like to see more of that!! Why was that included?

The chap dancing was Bob Cann, who Ashley included in his "Kicking Up The Sawdust Band" project. I saw them at the Theatre Royal in Stratford London around 1981.
