Subject: BS: 7.5/7.7 Quake and Oblivious From: Ebbie Date: 05 Jan 13 - 01:15 PM Last night at midnight an earthquake hit southeast Alaska and residents of Juneau report that their houses shook, kitchenware clanged, plants swung. At the time I was making my way down an outside staircase chatting with a friend who was taking me home from 'music'. When we were getting into his car two young men in a pickup pulled up to us and asked if we knew anything about a quake that had happened 'a minute ago'. We didn't. Reminds me of a quake I felt as a schoolchild in 1949 when our desks rattled, papers floated off the walls and all my world lost its stability. It was the first one I ever felt and it was beyond scary. Got home and my cousin who was staying with us had been taking a tub bath at the time and hadn't felt a thing. I'm just bemused, wondering how it is that a person doesn't feel a thing when everyone around one is agog. |

The copper urn on top - a huge 4' affair - landed a block away. The roof was lost and set afire. I and the rest of the co-op woke with a start thinking a plane had crashed. The woman who lived in the tiny penthouse on the roof slept through it. Go figure. |

Subject: RE: BS: 7.5/7.7 Quake and Oblivious From: Ebbie Date: 06 Jan 13 - 03:10 AM Yikes. I wouldn't want that experience, Sins. Leenia, the quake was some distance away - probably at least 50-80 miles- plus most of Juneau is on granite, so our bedrock is pretty stable, they say. But you are so right. Earthquakes are one of those things we have no control over and that's scary. |
