Subject: BS: Big bright moon From: Janie Date: 27 Dec 12 - 11:51 PM ...with a ring around it. A big ring. Directly overhead at Lat: 36.05 Lon: -79.47 Elev: 617ft. Pretty sight to see just before hitting the sack. The dark bare limbs of the oaks dissect both the moon and the ring. Just sayin....g'night and sweet dreams. |

Subject: RE: BS: Big bright moon From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 28 Dec 12 - 10:05 AM I woke the other night and the bedroom was as bright as day. Being a grumpy old trout, I muttered to myself about the bloody neighbours and their Crimbo lights. When I got up to see, it was a huge moon, absolutely beautiful. Shouldn't be so nasty in future! |

Subject: RE: BS: Big bright moon From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 28 Dec 12 - 11:14 AM Went kayaking on Estero Bay last night with my gal and did a little fishing as well. It was magical out there with an enormous moon peaking out thru long streaky clouds. We sang Midnite on the Water. |

Subject: RE: BS: Big bright moon From: Charmion Date: 28 Dec 12 - 12:17 PM Between the light pollution outside and the closed blinds inside, and the going to bed at 2113 hours, I didn't see a thing. My loss ... |

Subject: RE: BS: Big bright moon From: gnomad Date: 28 Dec 12 - 01:37 PM Didn't see it myself, but I have in the past a couple of times. I associate it with stormy conditions just a few hours later - did that happen for you Janie? |

Subject: RE: BS: Big bright moon From: GUEST,Charmion's brother Andrew Date: 28 Dec 12 - 02:38 PM More than the light pollution, it was the overcast--and snow--that gave us no look at the moon (it had set by the time I was abroad this morning). Mind you, we're about 800 miles north of the co-ordinates Janie gave, so that's to be expected. |

Subject: RE: BS: Big bright moon From: ranger1 Date: 28 Dec 12 - 02:44 PM Hard to see the moon for all the clouds and snow, but the night before was pretty awesome. The reflection of the moon in the windshield of my car made me go out and check to make sure the dome light wasn't on! |

Subject: RE: BS: Big bright moon From: Janie Date: 28 Dec 12 - 08:57 PM gnomad, No, at least in terms of "a few hours" but we are in an "unsettled" weather pattern of several days. The big storm that dumped so much snow in other parts of the country and spawned a tornado or two a 100 miles east of me scudded over these parts quickly and with little impact, dumping a lot of rain and/or snow to the west and to the east of my locale. Another front is moving through starting tonight, that will bring some rain here, but more rain elsewhere. Last night there was a high, very thin and uniform veil of clouds over this little southern part of heaven. Today was chilly and partly sunny until mid afternoon. Right now it is mostly cloudy with clear patches. Just came in from a spectacular view of the night sky to the east. The moon was hidden by patchy dense clouds with a patch of clear sky "above" them, and the light was very bright reflecting on the tops of the clouds. Would be more accurate to say there is patchy clear sky. Imagine a fiery sunset behind partial heavy clouds, only in silver and warm white. I started this post an hour ago, but breaks to answer pages and phone calls intervened, and I often stepped out on those calls to watch the sky. Tonight, the sky - the bright moon, the variable cloud cover, sudden bright stars in the clear patches that appear, and the high winds aloft are an amazing show. |

Subject: RE: BS: Big bright moon From: Crowhugger Date: 28 Dec 12 - 10:01 PM Last night it was quite clear, the mmon was very bright with no halo near Toronto around 2 a.m. Wished I'd had the energy for a dog walk at that hour. But being already in my jammies and half asleep, bed won out. Too bad it's cloudy tonight. |
