Subject: RE: Obit: Charles Durning-Actor and WWII Vet From: lefthanded guitar Date: 27 Dec 12 - 07:36 PM He's been on the large and small screen, and one of the poignant moments I remember him playing is from a lesser known role. On the tv show The Practice, Bobby Donnell plays an up and coming criminal defense lawyer, sharply dressed, sharp minded a real up and comer. He talks to his law firm about his dad, and says he works in a law firm in a neighborhing building. You see Bobby walking into the building late at night, and discover what he has concealed from his well heeled colleagues...when he says "Hi Dad. and hears the answer"Hi son," from an obviously loving and proud father to his striving son. His dad was Charles Durning. And he surely worked it the building..but as a janitor. There he was, a humble man, in a workmans overalls, mopping floors. Gives me a little chill even now. Charles was truly an actor's actor, who could take a turn at a small role and make it memorable. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Charles Durning-Actor and WWII Vet From: sciencegeek Date: 28 Dec 12 - 01:01 AM yes, Mike & I have long admired his work and his service. My favorite episode of NCIS featured his fine performance as a Medal of Honor winner along with an impromptu bit of song and dance. Still a soft shoe guy, despite his years. He will be missed. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Charles Durning-Actor and WWII Vet From: fat B****rd Date: 28 Dec 12 - 08:39 AM I found him especially good in "True Confessions" opposite Robert Duvall and Robert De Niro. Always a great player and remarkably adaptable. RIP Mr. Durning BTW I recall that he was sometimes taken for another actor, Brian Denehy. |
